Mauprévoir brings together the Clain and Payroux rivers in a landscape shaped by bocage and heritage. This gives you several options when planning your visit: trails and leisure activities by the water, a walk through the village centre or a longer hike. The area’s architectural history can also be discovered at several very different sites.

Rivers, bocage and riverside trails

The Clain runs through Mauprévoir from south to north; the waterways also include the Payroux and numerous streams that flow year-round or intermittently, including the Arquetan and Maury. The commune has 55 bodies of water, which support the development of distinctive plant and animal life. Mauprévoir lies in a transition zone between bocage and hilly or cultivated plains. Bocage shapes the entire commune: hedgerows border meadows where horses, sheep and cattle graze.

The communal lake, Plan d’eau communal, is 500 metres from the village centre, in a tree-lined setting. Several walking trails start there. The site is accessible with a pushchair and has picnic tables, a children’s playground, tennis courts and a boules court. This makes it easy to combine time by the water with walks or the leisure facilities on site. The trails, sports courts and play area offer different ways to spend the day; you can choose what to focus on according to your plans.

Architectural history in Mauprévoir

At the Château de Mauprévoir, a fortified gatehouse with two towers and a residential building with three towers have been preserved. In the past, moats fed by the Payroux surrounded the château. A drawbridge with a double portcullis crossed them. The surviving parts of the buildings and the former fortifications give the site a clearly identifiable architectural history.

The Église Sainte-Impère also has a long history: a papal bull issued by Urban II mentions it in 1096 as a church dependent on Charroux Abbey. The present church dates from the 11th century and was altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. The nave, bell tower and part of the chancel walls remain from the Romanesque building. The early reference and later alterations mark different stages in its architectural history.

The Fontaine du mal des yeux in La Gannerie still stands today. In the past, it was associated with pilgrimages by people seeking relief from eye complaints; these pilgrimages no longer take place. In L’Âge Pariolle, the Romanesque chapel presents a different architectural form: it has a square ground plan, and its first-floor prayer room is covered by a barrel vault. The former lime kilns are also visible there; they are about twenty metres high.

The Château de Chemouteau houses a Romanesque capital and a high relief from the 12th century. The relief depicts Jonah emerging from the whale’s mouth. Both works of art have been protected as historic monuments since 1945. Together with the church and the Château de Mauprévoir, they add a sculptural and religious dimension to the area’s architectural history.

A hike or a walk through the village centre

The Au temps d’Aliènor route, circular trail no. 8, is a moderately difficult 11-kilometre loop that takes 2 hours and 30 minutes. It follows paths through the countryside and a former railway line, taking in Mauprévoir’s heritage. Check the route conditions before setting off, as they may change.

Another option is the themed trail Les confidences de Mauprévoir, which runs through the village centre. Along the way, you can discover the flower-filled village, which has been awarded two flowers. The two options offer different experiences: Au temps d’Aliènor has a specified distance, difficulty level and duration, while Les confidences takes you through the village centre. You can then decide whether to set aside time for a longer hike or for the village centre.

Choose what to focus on during your stay

These differences can help you plan where to stay: would you like to include the trails and leisure facilities at the lake, explore the village centre or take the 11-kilometre loop? The sights and activities offer several points of reference, without requiring you to fit everything into a single day.
