Half-timbered houses and sacred art

The medieval streets of Saint-Loup-Lamairé are lined with half-timbered houses dating from the 15th and 16th centuries. For a cultural stay, you can combine this architecture with sacred art and other traces of the town’s history.

Local history and culture today

The Church of Notre-Dame de l’Assomption has an altarpiece; the right-hand side chapel also houses a permanent exhibition of sacred art. This means that a single piece of sacred furnishings and an exhibition sit side by side as different points of interest within the same church. Special arrangements may be required to view certain exhibits. If you are interested, check the relevant visiting conditions in advance.

The Maison Arouet is a 16th-century half-timbered house and is listed as a historic monument. Behind the house, former tannery pits and a shed used for drying hides have been preserved in the garden. These traces point to tanning and hide-drying as former craft activities. The Maison Arouet thus adds a tangible link to the tanning trade to the story of the area’s half-timbered architecture.

Médi@-Tech adds a different cultural dimension as a scientific and cultural centre. It brings together a library, a local Fab Lab and, since 2025, the Micro Folie Vallée du Thouet digital museum. Its cultural offering may evolve. The centre also has 3D printers and laser-cutting equipment. If you are interested in this equipment, check in advance whether it is currently open to the public. Médi@-Tech thus complements the historic buildings with a focus on libraries, digital culture and technology.

Trails and activities

The “Du Thouet au lac du Cébron” hiking trail starts at Place du Docteur Bouchet in front of the town hall. As the starting point may change, check the current route guide. The trail passes through the Espace Naturel Sensible des Lac du Cébron, linking the named starting point with a stretch through this protected natural area.

Canoe trips depart from a landing stage in the heart of Saint-Loup-Lamairé. The activity may be seasonal; check locally for availability. This allows you to take it into account when planning without assuming it is available all year round.

The “Cébron pour les zabdos” Tèrra-Aventura treasure hunt at Lac du Cébron in Saint-Loup-Lamairé is 8 km long. Check its digital availability in the Tèrra-Aventura app. The established municipal “12 croix” hiking trail is 5 km long. In terms of distance, “12 croix” is the shorter option; the stated distances differ by three kilometres. The formats also differ: a municipal hike is set against a digital treasure hunt.
