Faye-L'Abbesse can be explored through very different traces: religious sites of remembrance, historic buildings, a Neolithic dolmen and a route with views of the bocage landscape. This makes the town interesting if you do not want to reduce cultural history to a single building. For planning, it helps to distinguish clearly between the themes: Vierge de Rochette links Marian devotion with a connection to Lourdes, while Maison dite de Fernande, L'Hospice - La Mairie, Pont de Châtillon and La Pierre Levée each have their own architectural or historical stories.

Religious and architectural traces

A statue of the Virgin Mary was erected on a rock at Vierge de Rochette. The site is said to evoke the grotto at Lourdes; in the 1930s, the parish also erected a statue of Saint Bernadette there. The two statues thus share a common religious theme. If you are interested in local forms of Marian devotion, this site offers a clearly defined point of interest in Faye-L'Abbesse.

Maison dite de Fernande at Place du Général de Gaulle offers a glimpse of a different period. The house dates from before the French Revolution. Projecting wall ends once marked the limits of a timber-framed and earth facade. These former facade boundaries offer a concrete clue to the design of the house. Alongside the later-built L'Hospice - La Mairie, this creates a contrast between a pre-revolutionary house and a 19th-century building.

L'Hospice - La Mairie was built in 1881 as a hospital and hospice. Its date and original function place its construction in context. The focus here is on the building's origins as an institution, while Maison dite de Fernande is distinguished by its former timber-framed and earth facade. These different details offer two distinct perspectives on the town's architectural history.

Pont de Châtillon on the municipal boundary

Pont de Châtillon, also known as Pont Saint Louis, lies on the boundary between Faye-L'Abbesse and Boussais and spans the Thouaret with two round arches. It is a Romanesque bridge, probably built around 1200. The two arches are a distinctive feature of the structure, while the approximate dating reflects the uncertainty of its chronology. If you are interested in historic architectural styles, this crossing offers a different subject from the religious sites or the facade history of Maison dite de Fernande.

La Pierre Levée: a Neolithic monument

The protected dolmen La Pierre Levée is located in Les Sornières in Faye-L'Abbesse and dates from the Neolithic period. It was classified as a historic monument by decree on 28 April 1971. This site brings together its early origins and its protected status. Compared with buildings whose histories go back to before the French Revolution, to 1881 or probably to around 1200, the dolmen points to a much earlier period.

Bocage views along the route

If you would also like to include the landscape alongside the architectural and cultural themes, the “Autour des Brandes de Chaume” route offers a different perspective. It starts at the Rochette leisure area, 700 metres south of the church, and offers views of the bocage landscape. The distance indicates where the starting point is in relation to the church; it does not describe the length of the route. The route's focus on landscape is therefore distinct from the historic themes: here, the views of the bocage take centre stage.

Two perspectives for your stay

For your choice, a useful contrast emerges: the historic monuments tell stories from different periods, from the Neolithic through the bridge probably built around 1200 to buildings from before the French Revolution and from 1881. The route shifts the focus from dates and architectural styles to the bocage landscape. You can therefore plan your stay around historic periods, a religious theme or scenic views.
