Arçais can be explored through two closely connected themes: the historic Grand Port and the waterways of the Marais Sauvage. The fully restored harbor was one of the most important trading points between the plain and the Sèvre Niortaise valley. The town also has more than 40 km of navigable canals. This combination offers different ways to discover the town’s history and landscape: the harbor brings trade and architectural history into focus, while the paths and canals offer a chance to explore the Marais Sauvage.

Getting Here and Getting Around

The nearest train station is in Niort, from where there is a bus connection on Tanlib line 21. Check the latest timetable information before your trip so you can plan your arrival accordingly. There are also options for getting around Arçais and the surrounding area by bicycle and on the water.

La Bicyclette Verte offers a combined day of cycling and boating in the Marais Sauvage from its base in Arçais. The provider rents standard bicycles for children and adults, electric bicycles for adults, and electric scooters. Rental inventory may change, so check what is available before making plans. For those who want to combine the two activities, this offers a practical way to bring cycling and boating together in a single day’s itinerary.

Grand Port and Traces of History

At the Grand Port, two wooden cranes recall the harbor’s former work: poplar logs brought in along the waterways were hoisted onto the riverbank here. The cranes illustrate one aspect of the harbor’s former use. The Grand Port was also an important trading point between the plain and the Sèvre Niortaise valley.

Buildings and surviving details also tell the story of Arçais. By the river harbor stands a 19th-century logis, which is privately owned and visible from the road. On the ground floor of the Grand Logis, 11 warehouses were used to store goods transported onward to Niort and Marans. The former post, telegraph, and telephone building still bears the historic inscription “Poste – télégraphe – téléphone”. Arçais is also considered a typical village of the settlement and residential culture shaped by the maraîchin tradition.

Canals and Routes in the Marais Sauvage

The “Découverte du Marais sauvage à vélo” route starts in Arçais and follows quiet paths shaded by pollarded ash trees through the Marais Sauvage. It is 32.0 km long, of moderate difficulty, and takes about 3 hours 30 minutes. Both the approximate duration and distance are provided for planning. Those who prefer to get around on foot can use the towpath along the waterways for walks.

Another option is the circular route from the Embarcadère du Martin Pêcheur on the Route de Damvix in Arçais to Saint-Hilaire-la-Palud. It covers about 15 km through the Parc naturel régional du Marais Poitevin and offers an introduction to the Marais Sauvage. The two routes can be distinguished by the information provided: the cycling route specifies its difficulty and duration, while the circular route highlights its destination, park landscape, and approximate length.
