A 4.54-kilometre circular route takes you through the medieval town of Brigueuil and highlights its rich cultural heritage. If you would rather experience the area through its landscape, there are concrete options too: paths lead to wetlands and through wet meadows. Before your trip, you can decide whether architecture and history, nature or both should be the focus of your visit.

On foot through the town and countryside

The Sentier de Brigueuil is an interpretive circular route through the medieval town. It starts at Place de la Liberté and is 4.54 kilometres long. Its focus is the town’s cultural heritage; the distance gives you a concrete basis for planning. If you intend to follow the route, check the latest information about the starting point and route beforehand.

For a different perspective, the Sentier de la forêt d’enfer leads to the Etangs de Brigueuil, a natural area classified as a ZNIEFF. The Sentier de Villars passes through landscapes with wet meadows. At Etang de Brigueuil, the wetland is home to 14 plant species of high conservation value, including species with montane affinities. These descriptions give each nature trail its own emphasis, without requiring you to assume a particular walking time or level of difficulty.

For orientation, the Point Info Tourisme near the Brigueuil post office offers town guides, information sheets on walking and mountain-biking trails, and maps of the Terra Aventura geocaches. If you would like to use these materials for your planning, check the latest service information beforehand.

Buildings and history in Brigueuil

The Church of Saint-Martial stands within Brigueuil’s fortified enclosure and served to defend the town. Since 27 January 1925, it has been listed in France’s Supplementary Inventory of Historic Monuments. The church also contains the tomb of Marguerite de Chabot. A visit focused on architectural history can take in these different aspects of the building: its role within the fortifications, its protected status and the tomb.

Brigueuil’s square keep dates from the 11th century and is 44 metres tall. It has two levels; formerly, it had seven. At the entrance to its courtyard, the portal features depictions of flowers, fruit and birds. Two further landmarks in the medieval townscape are the 12th-century town gates: the eastern gate is called “Pont Levis” and the western one “du péage”. Their names distinguish the two gates without requiring you to follow a particular route through the town.

Smaller structures also tell stories of different periods and forms. The pyramidal Fontaine Pyramidale was built in 1830 from stones from Lesterps Abbey. The Lanterne des morts is a 12th-century monument made of local granite and has been listed as a historic monument since 1932. It is located in the cemetery and can be seen there year-round during opening hours. Check the cemetery’s opening hours before your visit. Another protected site is the mausoleum in the hamlet of La Boulonnie: the three-metre-high structure has a hexagonal ground plan and recalls the mausoleum in the rock-hewn church of Aubeterre. It has been listed as a historic monument since 1932 and is located on private property.

Craftsmanship as an additional discovery

At Céramiques Jacques Marchand, the entirely handmade production of Ponnes de Benest and Bujadiers de Thiat has been revived as a traditional craft since 2003; since 2024, Bujours de Saint-Césaire have also been made. The workshop has an exhibition and sells pieces made mainly from local raw materials. Visitors are asked to call before coming. This makes it possible to include an interest in traditional crafts in your plans, alongside the buildings and the different landscapes explored by the trails.
