Benest can be explored through two themes: the rural landscape along the Charente and a local history that has left its mark on buildings and craftsmanship. The Charente is the municipality’s main watercourse; the landscape is predominantly characterised by bocage. There are also circular and walking trails, as well as historic buildings with features from different centuries. For a short trip, you can focus on the landscape, architecture or both.

Landscape and trails

The Sentier de Val de Charente is a 14.5-kilometre circular trail through the Benest countryside, running mostly along paths. It starts on the Grand Rue. Along the way, you can experience the rural landscapes of the Charente, with bocage and hamlets. Its length and circular route provide a clear framework for planning your outing. The Sentier du Père Thomas starts in the centre of Benest. The two trails therefore differ in their stated starting points for planning: a 14.5-kilometre loop from the Grand Rue and a start in the town centre.

Church, craftsmanship and architectural history

The Église Saint-Justinien brings together several building phases: the present building dates from no earlier than the 12th century, while the chapel on the south side of the choir dates from the 15th century. The church has been protected as a historic monument since 5 December 1984. The building thus brings together the construction period of the present structure and the later date of a chapel.

The Four Ă  ponnes offers a glimpse of the history of construction and the former production of ponnes. The kiln was built in 1869 and remained in operation until around 1930. Ponnes of different sizes, decorated with patterns characteristic of Benest, were fired there. Production in Benest appears to have a very long tradition. The church and kiln offer different insights: the church focuses on its building phases, while the kiln illustrates the craft tradition and the design of its products.

The Prieuré Saint-Justinien also features a specific architectural detail: a defensive tower stands at the north-west corner of the entrance courtyard. Château d'Ordières comprises a keep, a chapel, a dovecote, a mill, a barn, a well, a spring and a kiln. The complex is privately owned.

Past mobility

The Petit Mairat narrow-gauge railway offers another glimpse into the past. It ran through Benest from 1911 to 1938; the station was in Loume. This former connection adds the history of local mobility to the story of the landscape and buildings.

Choose a focus for your stay

When looking for a holiday rental in Benest, your preferred focus can guide your choice. If you want to plan your trip around a specific route, consider the Sentier de Val de Charente. For a focus on architectural history, the church’s building phases and the history of the Four à ponnes offer different themes.
