Perched on a rocky promontory above the Gironde Estuary, Talmont-sur-Gironde combines a preserved bastide layout with a church classified as a Monument historique, viewpoints and maritime history. Different themes can guide your visit: the layout of the village, a walking route, the path to the church or winegrowing on the estuary.

Bastide and Église Sainte-Radegonde

Talmont-sur-Gironde has preserved its original layout as a bastide. It was founded in 1284 by Edward I of Aquitaine. This means that a visit is shaped not only by a single building, but also by the village’s historic layout. Those interested in history can compare this development with the later heritage protection of the Église Sainte-Radegonde: the church has been classified as a Monument historique by decree since 30 August 1890.

The church towers over the village. This makes it a striking landmark in descriptions of the area, while the bastide layout draws attention to the development of the village as a whole. Both aspects tell different parts of the story: the preserved layout dating from 1284, and a religious building with a precisely dated classification. In Talmont-sur-Gironde, a small maritime cemetery adjoins a religious building; the description of the area does not identify it more specifically.

Two routes, two perspectives

The Promenade des remparts offers a walk around Talmont-sur-Gironde, with beautiful viewpoints along the way. The Chemin des vestiges de la Tour Blanche, by contrast, leads towards the Église Sainte-Radegonde. The two routes therefore differ in focus: the Promenade is a circular route around the village, while the Chemin points the way to the church.

Maritime history on the estuary

Talmont’s maritime history includes the traditional fishing of sturgeon from a yole on the Gironde Estuary. This practice has existed for several centuries. What makes it distinctive is the connection between fishing, the boat and the place: it is not just about the fish caught, but also about a way of working on the estuary passed down over a long period. The small maritime cemetery beside the religious building is another local connection to maritime history; it is described as a separate site.

A time-limited activity was the “Nœuds marins” workshop in Talmont-sur-Gironde. Scheduled to run from 9 July to 27 August 2026, the workshop included a session on sailors’ knots and a visit to the Musée de la Pêche. Participation was open to children aged six and over, who had to be accompanied by an adult. These age and accompaniment requirements applied to this workshop.

Winegrowing and planning your visit

The Les Hauts de Talmont wine estate practices biodynamic viticulture. This adds a connection to the local wine industry to the area’s architectural and maritime heritage. For wine-tasting tours, booking at least 72 hours in advance is recommended. Check the visitor information when planning so that you can allow for this lead time.

If you are looking for hotels for a trip to Talmont, first decide which aspects you want to shape your stay: the preserved bastide layout, the Église Sainte-Radegonde, the viewpoints along the Promenade or the winegrowing. For a visit focused on wine, the wine-tasting tours and the recommendation to book in advance are practical points to consider. Those more interested in local history can explore the bastide and the church as two distinct historical points of interest.
