Saint-Thomas-de-Conac combines Romanesque heritage with landscapes ranging from vineyards and wooded marshland to views over the Gironde estuary. Different priorities can shape your choice of stay here: historic buildings, a rural marshland setting, and visits involving Pineau and distillation. The routes also offer different levels of planning, from a ten-kilometre circuit to a marked mountain-bike loop and a horse-riding route with an approximate duration.

Landscapes between vineyards and marshland

The commune lies within the Marais et falaises des coteaux de Gironde Natura 2000 site, a Special Area of Conservation (SAC). The landscape is particularly easy to take in at the Moulin Ă  vent de la Croix: the windmill was built on a hill in 1820 and overlooks vineyards, wooded marshland and rolling countryside. Here, agricultural land and marshland meet, rather than the area being defined by a single type of landscape.

The Château de Conac is also connected to its position on the Gironde: it was built on a rocky outcrop overlooking the river. Together with the views over the estuary featured on two routes, this gives the landscape and route descriptions a clear connection to the Gironde.

Church, mill and château

The Eglise Saint-Thomas was a dependency of the Priory of Savigny in the Diocese of Lyon. Around 1070, a canon of Saintes Cathedral gave the church to the priory. Romanesque features and the bay beneath the bell tower are among the building’s defining characteristics. On 30 July 2002, the entire church was listed as a historic monument.

At the Moulin à vent de la Croix, construction history and surviving equipment come together: the mill still has its millstones and mechanisms and is largely intact overall. The listing as a historic monument, made on 28 October 1996, also covers the mechanism and the lower room. The Château de Conac adds another aspect to this architectural history, with its location on the rocky outcrop above the Gironde. The three buildings thus represent different aspects of the area: Romanesque religious architecture, milling technology and a striking historic setting.

Routes with different levels of planning

The Circuit des coteaux de Saint-Thomas-de-Conac is ten kilometres long and passes through rural landscapes and marshland. The Circuit VTT N°14 – Les Coteaux de l'Estuaire is a marked 24-kilometre mountain-bike loop. Its features include remarkable views over the Gironde estuary; numerous truffle groves can also be found along the route.

The Saint-Thomas-de-Conac Ă  cheval horse-riding route is rated easy and takes approximately four hours. It includes a picnic area overlooking the estuary. In terms of time commitment, this route is described differently from the two circuits: its approximate duration and difficulty are highlighted, while the circuits are described by distance and, in the case of the mountain-bike route, by its markings and loop format. Check the route conditions before setting out on the horse-riding tour.

Visits involving Pineau

At Domaine de la Ville, you can visit the vineyard, cellars and distillery by appointment; a tasting is included. Red, rosé, white and aged Pineau are sold on site. At Marchand Patrice, visits to the vineyard, cellars and distillery are available by appointment only. Confirm current availability with them before your visit.

If you want to combine cultural history and landscape, the church and windmill offer specific points of interest; there are also different options for those who would rather plan routes or wine visits. This lets you tailor your stay to your interests without reducing the landscape, architectural history and visitor experiences to a single focus.
