Saint-Ciers-du-Taillon brings together a layered church history, Château d’Orignac and the woodland landscape of the Forêt de la Lande. A waymarked cycling loop and two picnic areas complement the historical themes with practical ways to experience the area and its surroundings.

Valley, forest and river

The municipality lies in a broad valley between the northern slopes of the Gironde and the Forêt de la Lande forest. The Taillon is a small river that rises in meadows below the Montée Blanche, near the hamlet of Couy. This brings two scales together: the valley describes the wider landscape setting of the municipality, while the spring’s location identifies a specific point near Couy.

Church and local history

The Église Saint-Cyriaque preserves structural elements of an early Romanesque predecessor. In the 12th century, its stone-built nave was raised; the choir was completely rebuilt in the early 16th century. The church therefore brings together surviving parts of its predecessor and later changes to the nave and choir. As a whole, the church was listed as a historic monument by decree dated 23 July 2003.

A wayside cross marks the site of the former hospital. In the Middle Ages, a hospice in the lower part of the village took in travellers on the Way of St James. The cross and hospice point to different aspects of local history: the marked site of the former hospital and the reception of travellers.

Château d’Orignac

Château d’Orignac lies north of the centre of Saint-Ciers-du-Taillon. It is associated with a seigneurie whose history dates back to around 1200; the château was rebuilt several times in the 18th and 19th centuries. These dates distinguish its long-standing historical association from the much later phases of rebuilding. The château is surrounded by an extensive park, accessed through a fortified carriage gate.

Cycling in the forest

Mountain Bike Route No. 6, titled “Les circuits couverts et découverts,” is designed for exploring the Forêt de la Lande forest. The waymarked loop is 30 kilometres long. Its woodland setting, circular route and length give the ride a different focus from the church and château history, while also offering practical details to help you decide whether this outdoor activity suits your interests.

Picnic areas

Next to the church is a shaded picnic area with five tables, waste bins and sanitary facilities. It is open year-round and free to access. Another picnic area is located on the D730 towards Mirambeau; it has two tables and waste bins. This area is also open year-round and free to access. The differences noted can help you choose: the area next to the church offers shade and sanitary facilities, while the second is located on the D730 towards Mirambeau.
