Port-d'Envaux offers a variety of ways to spend your stay, with stone art, historic buildings and wetlands. When choosing accommodation, it is therefore helpful to first decide what you would like to focus on during the day: guided visits to cultural sites and architecture, trails through natural areas or a trip along the Charente. The Bernard Palissy III, an electric-solar excursion boat, stops in Port-d'Envaux and offers river cruises from April to October; it departs from Saintes.
Stone Art and Cultural Heritage
Since 2001, Les Lapidiales, also known as La Galaxie des Pierres Levées, have used the former Chabossières quarry in Port-d'Envaux to work stone directly on the quarry faces. The Lapidiales host sculptors from around the world as artists in residence; they create their works on site. The grounds are open year-round, with free access and admission for everyone. Unlike the seasonal cruises, the Lapidiales can therefore be visited throughout the year.
Built on the banks of the Charente during the reign of Louis XV, the Château de Panloy offers one-hour guided tours. Check the current visiting dates in advance. The château is listed in the supplementary inventory of historic monuments. A striking architectural feature is the dovecote, dated 1620, with 3,000 round terracotta nesting chambers.
The Chaussée de Saint-James focuses on its structure and historical foundations: it was built on an old Roman road and comprises 22 arches, including three original vaulted arches. The Chapelle de Saint-James was rebuilt after the Wars of Religion on the ruins of a former priory. This priory served as a hospital in the 13th century. The two named buildings offer a chance to explore different aspects of the area's history.
Wetlands, Trails and Leisure
The Vallon du Bel Air is a wetland of about 20 hectares on the boundary between Port-d'Envaux and Crazannes, with an educational trail. The 7-hectare Panloy nature park also has a nature trail where you can discover local wildlife and plant life. Pré Valade is home to a 2.5-hectare public leisure area with walking paths. It also has a mixed-use fishing area that is accessible to people with reduced mobility. The three locations offer different experiences: educational trails in a wetland and nature park, alongside the leisure area at Pré Valade.
For a hike, a specific distance and duration are given: an 8 km route lasting two hours starts in front of the church of Saint-Saturnin-de-Séchaud in Port-d'Envaux. La Flow Vélo passes through the village and crosses a wetland via a footbridge. As the route may change, check the current course before setting out.
On the water, the Bernard Palissy III excursion boat is a seasonal option: cruises on the Charente depart from Saintes, stop at Port-d'Envaux and operate from April to October. Check the current timetable before your trip. The planning considerations therefore differ: the hiking route has a stated distance and duration, while the season and timetable are the main things to consider for the river cruise.
