A public garden, historic buildings and a bamboo nursery give Matha a variety of attractions. As you plan your trip, consider whether culture, nature or a combination of both will shape your stay: Église Saint-Herie and Château de Matha represent different chapters in the town’s history, while Jardin de Paix and La Bambouseraie offer their own ways to explore art, plants and nature.
Church Architecture and History
Église Saint-Herie combines a Romanesque nave with an early Gothic choir. Its heritage designation also has an exact date: the church has been classified as a historic monument by decree since April 10, 1912. Its architecture and legal status thus offer two different points of reference if you are interested in Matha’s historic buildings.
The documented construction history of Château de Matha dates back to the 9th century; it has been classified as a historic monument since 1948. The entrance châtelet, shaped like a Renaissance pavilion, has been preserved. The information on its construction date, classification and architecture relates to different aspects of the château: the early date refers to its origins, while the surviving entrance building is associated with a later architectural style.
Jardin de Paix: Art and Human Rights
The public Jardin de Paix covers 8,000 m² and is dedicated to solidarity and the pursuit of peace. Monumental works of art by artists from France and abroad address human rights. The garden therefore focuses not only on plants and design, but also on a social issue.
Among its distinctive features are peace plaques sent to Matha by heads of state and representatives of cultures from around the world. The artworks and plaques offer different perspectives on peace: the former explore human rights, while the latter are visible symbols of international solidarity. If you would like to combine cultural themes with a public garden during your stay, this dedication is a defining part of Matha’s character.
Plant Diversity at La Bambouseraie
La Bambouseraie brings together more than 60 bamboo varieties from collections, along with tropical flowers, lotus flowers and water lilies. The plants on display also include an impressive giant water lily. This offers a different focus from the historic buildings: instead of architectural styles and heritage dates, the emphasis here is on different plant species and their forms.
The sensory plant experience includes medicinal, aphrodisiac and shamanic plants, as well as plants to smell, touch and taste. Animals are also part of the visit: you can spot ornamental ducks, Australian geese, Asian pheasants and crowned cranes. You can further narrow down your interests within the nature theme—to bamboo and aquatic plants, the sensory experience or the animal species mentioned.
Treasure Hunts and Walks as Other Options
Terra Aventura in Matha uses QR codes hidden in nature for a treasure hunt that invites participants to find their locations. This is a different way to explore the surroundings than a visit focused on architecture or gardens. Check the route’s availability before you travel so you can plan this activity accordingly.
For a longer walk, the Les Étangs de Thors – PR 23 circular route is another option. It runs between Matha and Thors through forests and vineyards, near the stream l’Antenne, a tributary of the Charente. Two options are listed: 14 km, taking 3 hours 30 minutes, or 11 km, taking 2 hours 45 minutes.
Tickets and Planning
The Bureau d’Information Touristique de Matha sells tickets for concerts, performances, leisure activities and transport. As the offer may change, check in advance whether it includes the service you want. Along with the availability of the Terra Aventura route, this is a practical point to consider when planning; the other attractions described can help you decide how to balance culture, garden visits and walks according to your interests.
