A walking route through the town’s history, preserved wells, historic buildings and a Friday morning market give Lagord several points of interest for a stay. Parc André Charier, a green space for strolling, is another. Depending on your interests, you can include a route with a set distance, a trail to the wells, architectural history or market day in your plans.
Trails between history and greenery
The Sentier de découvertes was created in May 2008. The seven-kilometre circular route takes two hours and invites you to rediscover Lagord’s history. Its distance, duration and historical theme give the outing a clear framework; check the route details locally before setting off. The Chaîne des puits route leads to the various preserved wells in Lagord. The Circuit des arbres fruitiers is one of the walking or cycling loops. Parc André Charier is a green space where you can stroll.
Preserved historic buildings
The former Prieuré Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption was built in the 12th century. The western part of the nave and the entrance portal have survived from the original building. The nave is the main space in a church, while the portal is the entrance. The preserved parts can thus be identified as two distinct elements: a section of the church interior and its entrance.
Moulin Benoist is one of two windmills that have survived from Lagord’s former group of six; the other is Moulin Vendôme. The contrast between the six former mills and the two that remain gives a brief picture of the historic windmills.
Château du Bois d'Huré is a care home (EHPAD), not a regular visitor attraction. Its old chapel has a triangular pediment. The château park also contains a freestanding dovecote dating from 1599. The two structures therefore have different details worth noting: the shape of the pediment and the dovecote’s specific construction date.
The German army built 18 bunkers in the park in front of Château du Clavier. They were used mainly to hide weapons, as well as for archiving and storing food. If you would like to visit the bunkers, check access in advance.
Friday morning market
Lagord’s traditional market takes place every Friday morning between Square des Echassiers and the Oiseaux de Mer shopping centre. Each week, it offers food products to residents and visitors to the town. If you plan to make the market a fixed part of your itinerary, check the date shortly before your visit.
Two fixed points can help with planning your day: the Sentier de découvertes takes two hours, while the market is held on Friday mornings. You can plan the trail around the time available and the market around the day of the week you are staying.
