Étaules brings together the architectural history of the Protestant temple and the church, oyster farming, and walks as different ways to experience a stay. It is worth distinguishing between the walking routes: the PR22 circular route is described with a distance and approximate duration, while walks in the freshwater marsh may take you past vineyards overlooking the marsh. Your overnight plans can also reflect which of these interests you would like to shape your stay.

Sacred Buildings with Different Histories

The Protestant temple in Étaules was built between 1859 and 1864. Its tympanum depicts an open Bible. The church has a carved oak pulpit and modern stained-glass windows by glass artist Henri Guérin. These were installed in 1963, after the 1945 bombings. An earlier chapter in the building’s history began with stones from the ruined Notre-Dame de l'Isle church: they were transported to Étaules in 1722. With royal permission and support, some of the stones were used to rebuild the present-day church. Visitors interested in sacred architecture can distinguish between two different features: the temple’s depiction of an open Bible, and the church’s pulpit, windows and history of its stones.

Oyster Landscape and Direct Sales

The oyster marsh area of Étaules includes 25 oyster farms across almost 100 hectares of oyster maturation ponds. The number of farms and the area may change over time. Marennes-Oléron oyster specialties produced here include fine de claire, spéciale de claire and pousse en claire. For private customers, oyster farmer Éric Courtin offers direct sales from his farm in Orivol. If you would like to include this purchase in your plans, confirm availability before travelling.

Walks: Duration and Landscape

The circular route “PR22: Marais salé, vers le port ostréicole d'Orivol” is a very easy walking trail. It is 3.36 kilometres long and takes about 40 minutes. The distance and approximate duration help you fit this walking leg into your day’s plans. Walks in the freshwater marsh of Étaules offer a different perspective on the landscape: you may come across vineyards overlooking the marsh. If you want an indication of how long a walk will take, the PR22 has an approximate duration; the vineyards, by contrast, are a possible sight on walks in the freshwater marsh.

Plan Your Stay Around Your Interests

The PR22 provides an approximate duration for the circuit; if you want to buy directly from Éric Courtin, confirm availability before travelling. These are two different planning questions: how much time would you like to allow for a walk, and would you like to include a purchase from an oyster farmer? You can then link your search for an overnight stay to the activities that interest you in Étaules.
