Courçon combines a signposted cycle route with Romanesque heritage, regular market days and outdoor activities. The Circuit cyclable 11 starts right at the market square and is listed as a standalone activity taking around three hours; Notre-Dame and the five-storey cooperative mill add to the cultural attractions. Walks in the adjacent Benon Forest and a digital tour offer further perspectives on the landscape and local history. This lets you balance your stay between exercise, architectural history and a visit to the market.
Cycling and the Countryside Around Courçon
The signposted Circuit cyclable 11 – De coteaux en marais starts at Courçon market square and is ridden in one direction. It is listed as an easy 31-kilometre cycle ride taking about three hours. These details make the route a standalone activity with a longer time commitment, rather than a brief stop. The signs indicate a direction of travel; plan accordingly.
The route passes through landscapes between the plain and the wet marshes. Courçon lies on the southern edge of the Parc du Marais Poitevin. Benon Forest borders the town and offers walks in nature. This provides a range of outdoor activities: a signposted cycle route with a stated duration and walks in the adjacent forest. Courçon’s location on the southern edge of the Parc du Marais Poitevin and the route through the plain and wet marshes offer specific points of reference for exploring the surrounding landscape.
Church and Cooperative Mill
Notre-Dame de Courçon is predominantly Romanesque and was built in 1091. Its history also includes later alterations: the choir may date from the 15th century, while the upper sections with battlements were renovated in the 19th century. The church therefore shows an early building history alongside later changes, although the dating of the choir remains uncertain.
The five-storey mill of the Minoterie coopérative de Courçon adds another perspective on local history. It was built in 1927 and has been in operation since 1935. The cooperative works exclusively with farmers from within a radius of no more than ten kilometres. The year it was built, when it began operating and its geographically limited collaboration each offer different insights into the mill. The building also houses a shop that is open year-round, Monday to Friday. If you plan to visit, check the current opening hours in advance.
Market and Outdoor Activities
The market is held year-round on the market square on Wednesdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Sundays from 8 a.m. to noon. It offers food and non-food products. The Wednesday market runs an hour longer than the Sunday one. Check the current market times before your trip if you plan to attend on a particular day.
The fitness trail, with a picnic area, has five exercise stations: a pump bar, obstacle hedges, balance beams, pull-up bars and parallel bars. The stations combine different forms of exercise, from balance activities to workouts on bars and parallel bars. This makes the facility different from the cycle route and walks: it focuses on individual exercise stations rather than a route through the landscape.
Digital Tour of Courçon
EXPLORAMA is a free digital tour that guides visitors around Courçon’s heritage, landscapes and local stories via smartphone. The tour launched in summer 2026; check whether it is available before your trip. While the 31-kilometre Circuit cyclable, which takes about three hours, is clearly defined as a cycle route, EXPLORAMA focuses on digital content about Courçon’s heritage, landscape and local stories. You can choose between a signposted cycle route and a themed tour, depending on how you would like to explore during your stay.
