Chenac-Saint-Seurin-D'uzet brings together architectural history and varied landscapes along the estuary. Saint-Seurin-d’Uzet is historically associated with Gironde caviar. At the harbor, along the Chauvignac and on the banks of the Gironde, you can experience different sides of the town. When planning your trip, you can prioritize culture, nature and activities according to what you would like to discover.

Caviar Tradition and Architectural History

The Église Saint-Séverin by the harbor was completed in 1721, after construction began in 1707. Its elongated nave, the rose window on the west façade and its Neo-Romanesque style feature in the traditional description of the building. The Château de Saint-Seurin-d’Uzet dates back to the 14th century and is a fortified complex: a four-arched bridge spans the moat and leads to the gatehouse.

The town’s industrial heritage is also part of its cultural character. The restored Minoterie des Monards has preserved much of its machinery and is considered a testament to this heritage. It complements the history of the castle and church with a different perspective on the local past.

Saint-Seurin-d’Uzet is historically associated with Gironde caviar. The first caviar produced in France was made in the 1920s thanks to Maison Prunier. The Auberge-Musée du caviar et de l’esturgeon is located in the former Esturgeon inn, a historic site for preparing and tasting Gironde caviar. In 2013, an association was tasked with establishing and continuing to run the museum. If you are planning a visit, check with the museum in advance about current options.

Gironde Riverbanks and Landscapes

The banks of the Gironde in Chenac-Saint-Seurin-d’Uzet include dead cliffs, wet meadows and small former fishing harbors that have become marinas. The surrounding landscape also features agricultural land, slopes and partly steep valleys. At Port des Monards, which borders the municipality of Barzan, the Chauvignac is designated as a Natura 2000 site.

Near Conchemarche, a reed bed provides shelter for almost 30 bird species. It is managed by the Conservatoire du littoral and the Conservatoire régional des espaces naturels. If you would like to visit the area, check locally which paths are suitable and what visitor guidelines apply.

You can explore the Chauvignac on a walk along its banks; you can also go canoeing on the river. Route No. 6 offers another perspective on the region: it passes through vineyard-covered slopes and hilly landscapes, across marshland and by cliffs overlooking the Gironde estuary. These landscapes give the route its character, while the path along the river provides a direct connection to the Chauvignac.

Planning Visits and Accommodation

At the Atelier des Remparts in Saint-Seurin-d’Uzet, visitors can meet artists, talk with them and discover their work. As visiting arrangements may vary, check the current options in advance.
