If you want to focus your trip on archaeology and cultural heritage, Barzan offers several different points of interest: the Gallo-Roman archaeological site of Le Fâ combines an ancient city with a museum; there is also a church and evidence of maritime history. A visit to Le Fâ focuses on archaeological areas and museum objects, while other buildings and the historic harbour offer different perspectives on the area.

Le Fâ: Archaeological Site and Museum

The Gallo-Roman archaeological site of Le Fâ and its museum cover more than two hectares. They offer guided visits, numerous events and a wide range of educational activities. Visitors planning a trip can therefore explore both the ancient city and how it is interpreted in the museum. Le Fâ also holds the “Accueil Vélo” bike-friendly label.

Guided visits take you through the ancient city and its two distinctive areas: the baths and the sanctuary. These include the circular temple and various rooms in the baths. If you plan to join a guided visit, check the latest schedule, as tour times may change.

The Le Fâ Museum displays nearly 1,000 objects recovered during excavations in three themed galleries. They focus on daily life, architecture and trade. The museum also features 3D models and images of the Roman baths and circular temple. Visitors can explore these two buildings through both the objects on display and spatial representations. The archaeological site is located above the Gironde estuary, giving the visit a clear connection to the surrounding landscape.

Harbour, Architecture and Maritime History

The Port des Monards and its canal probably date back to the Middle Ages, when silting along the banks of the Gironde estuary influenced the formation of marshland. The Pyramid of La Garde is a reminder of seafaring: it served as a landmark for ships crossing the Gironde estuary. The structure is privately owned but visible from the road. This distinction is important when planning a visit: being visible from the road does not mean that the private structure is open to visitors.

The Church of Saint-Pierre is another part of Barzan’s architectural heritage. It is a neo-Gothic building with a Latin cross-shaped floor plan. You can choose what to focus on: at Le Fâ, the Roman city, baths, sanctuary and museum interpretation take centre stage; the other sites range from religious architecture to the history of shipping at the estuary. This allows you to decide whether to focus your trip primarily on archaeology or take a broader cultural and historical approach.

Getting There and Planning Your Visit

By car, you can reach Le Fâ via the A10 motorway, exit 36 towards Jonzac/Pons, then continue via Gémozac and Cozes. As traffic and roadworks can affect your journey, it is a good idea to check the route before setting off. For your visit, it is worth checking the schedule for any guided tour you plan to join in advance. This lets you plan your trip around the available visits without assuming a fixed itinerary or duration.
