Archingeay can be explored through several specific themes: the La Boutonne, historic fountains, museum collections and local traditions. The La Boutonne flows west of the commune; a historic thermal spring in Archingeay was located west of the village, not far from the Château de la Vallée. This takes you from the commune’s surroundings to individual stories about the village. If you would like to explore cultural history alongside the natural landscape, the town offers more than one way to do so.

Riverside Setting and Natural History

One particular focus is the deposit known as “Ambre des Charentes” (Charentes amber). Traces of several hundred animals and plants trapped in resin make it a natural history topic alongside local buildings and traditions. This broadens the picture of Archingeay beyond fountains and local history: the deposit itself offers a tangible starting point for exploring the animal and plant life of the past.

Fountains and Thermal Springs

The historic fountains raise a variety of questions. The thermal spring in Archingeay was located west of the village, not far from the Château de la Vallée; the Vallée spring was considered to have healing properties. The second fountain on the “Circuit des Fontaines – PR 33” walking route was often used as a water source and washing place. A thermal spring on this route is said to have been known to the Romans. Bronze coins dating from the 4th century, attributed to Emperor Constantine, were found there. Thus, past everyday use, healing traditions and a cautiously reported Roman connection sit side by side. Drawing water and washing tell the story of how a fountain was used, while the healing spring and Roman attribution offer other historical interpretations.

The Musée Les Trésors de Lisette

The Musée Les Trésors de Lisette presents curiosities, toys, fashion and miniatures. The visitor experience also includes interactive games and staged displays. This gives the museum a different focus from the stories surrounding the fountains: here, the collection pieces and how they are presented take centre stage. In 2026, the museum is open every day throughout the year. If you are travelling outside that year, please check the opening hours in effect at the time.

Church and Local Traditions

The Église Saint-Martin is another historic point of interest in the town. It was listed by decree on 14 June 1928. Another form of local memory is the tradition that Saint-Maclou died in Archingeay. Here, a dated listing and a local story sit side by side: the church is associated with a specific date, while the saint’s death is recounted as a tradition. You can thus explore Archingeay’s history from different perspectives, from fountains and the museum to the church and local stories. The bronze coins date from the 4th century; the decree listing the church dates from 1928.
