Roisel combines architectural and commemorative history with a route through marshes and peat bogs. In the town, the designers and construction years of three buildings provide specific points of reference; at the Saint-Martin parish church, a precisely located relief stands out. The Voie Verte Péronne-Roisel adds a landscape highlight. This lets you decide whether your interests lie more in the buildings and historic memorial sites, or in activity and scenery.
Architectural heritage from 1926 to 1930
Roisel Town Hall was designed by M. Lucet and dates from 1926. The Salle des fêtes et cinéma was designed by Henri Bénard and dates from 1927; the Groupe scolaire was designed by Maurice Martineau and dates from 1930. All three buildings have carried the “Patrimoine XXe siècle” label since 2005.
The sequence of years forms a brief chronology from 1926 to 1930. The names also distinguish the buildings: the town hall, the event hall and cinema, and the school represent different building types. Their shared label links them through their association with the 20th century; the designers and construction years distinguish the individual examples. If architecture is your main interest, you can compare their functions, designs and periods.
A detail at the Saint-Martin parish church
A bas-relief depicting Saint Martin’s act of charity is located on the stone lintel above the main portal of the Saint-Martin parish church. The motif is thus situated on a specific architectural feature. The church was completely destroyed during the war; work on it was finally approved on 28 May 1930. The relief and the approval date offer different points of reference: an architectural detail and a precise moment in the church’s history.
The extension of the municipal cemetery
The extension of Roisel’s municipal cemetery was laid out in October and November 1918 and completed after the armistice by bringing together British and German graves from areas north, east and south of Roisel. The extension commemorates 514 German nationals; 190 of them are unidentified. Its creation therefore includes an initial layout in autumn 1918 and a later completion after the armistice.
For orientation, the extension is immediately north of the municipal cemetery, on the east side of the road to Villers-Faucon. Its location complements the historical information with a specific geographical reference. Both the time of its creation and the number of people commemorated there are central to this site.
The Voie Verte through marshes and peat bogs
The Voie Verte Péronne-Roisel passes through marshes and peat bogs. It is rated very easy for road cycling, walking, touring cycling and mountain biking. The options therefore include more than different types of cycling: walking is listed alongside three cycling disciplines, and their shared rating makes it possible to compare the activities mentioned. Your choice here depends both on the type of activity you prefer and your interest in the route’s scenery.
