Friville-Escarbotin combines architectural history with a museum dedicated to industrial history and an Espace Aquatique. The churches reflect different periods of construction: at Saint-Étienne, the history of the choir dates back to the 15th century, while the construction phases of Saint-Hubert span the 1840s. The museum focuses on reconstructed workshops and historic locks, padlocks and chests. The Espace Aquatique offers a different kind of activity. Which stop is right for you also depends on whether you are looking for culture, architecture or water activities.
Church architecture from different centuries
Two periods of construction can be distinguished at the Église Saint-Étienne de Friville. Monks from Sery Abbey built the choir in the second half of the 15th century; the nave was built in 1785. A decree dated 29 December 1981 listed part of the choir as a historic monument. This protected status applies to the choir, not to the building as a whole.
The Église Saint-Hubert d’Escarbotin was completed in stages: first the choir in 1842, then the nave in 1843 and finally the spire in 1845. Its floor plan also differs in its details: the church has a single nave, ends in a polygonal choir and has a portal or porch tower. A single-nave floor plan means that the nave is not divided into several parallel aisles; the polygonal end describes the many-sided shape at the end of the choir.
The former Chapelle Saint-Hubert in Escarbotin is distinct from this church. It is documented from 1637; Étienne de Roussé is possibly its founder. The Chapelle des Saints Anges in Belloy-sur-Mer is another part of the area’s history: it originally belonged to the nearby château, and the municipality acquired it in 1927.
Industrial history at the museum
The Musée des Industries du Vimeu is housed in an 18th-century building and opened in 1965. Visitors can see reconstructed old workshops and collections of locks, padlocks and chests. The collections span the period from the 16th century to the present day. A visit to the museum thus focuses both on working life and on objects whose forms and history can be traced over several centuries.
If you are planning a group visit, note the access requirements: the museum is open primarily to groups of 15 or more by prior reservation. Check the arrangements for visits in advance, before including the museum in your plans.
Water activities at the Espace Aquatique
The Espace Aquatique in Friville-Escarbotin is described as a 1,000 m² aquatic and leisure complex open to everyone. Its facilities include a 312 m² sports pool with five swimming lanes and a leisure pool. The latter features a massage bench, a whirlpool and the “Canon Slide” waterslide. The pools therefore offer different experiences: the sports pool is defined by its lanes, while the leisure pool has additional water features. Check the facility’s current operating information before your visit.
This gives you a clear choice between cultural attractions with historic architecture, a museum with collections spanning several centuries and a leisure complex. The churches’ architectural details offer concrete points of interest for a visit focused on architectural history; the museum and Espace Aquatique offer different experiences. For a museum visit, it is particularly important to take the group requirements into account, while checking the current operating information is useful for the Espace Aquatique.
