For a stay in Fontaine-Sur-Somme, you can focus on historic architecture or time outdoors. The Église Notre-Dame de l'Assomption de Vieulaines and the Château de Vieulaines offer different architectural points of interest; the two routes focus on activity and landscape. You can make your choice based on specific features: building phases, the layout of a building, how a route is used, or a panorama over the Somme Valley.

Church and Château: Building History and Form

At the Église Notre-Dame de l'Assomption de Vieulaines, the dates relate to different parts of the building. The bays of the nave probably date from the mid-16th century; the choir, with a straight bay and a polygonal end, dates from the late 16th century. Bays are individual sections of the nave; a polygonal choir end has several sides. In the choir, therefore, the straight bay and the end describe different forms in sequence. This lets you read the building's history as a distinction between the nave and the choir, rather than reducing the building to a single date. Since 27 December 1974, the entire church has been listed as a Monument historique under a prefectural decree. The different dates make the successive phases within the church tangible, while the listing of the entire building indicates its protected status.

At the Château de Vieulaines, the focus is on the composition of the building. The main building was constructed around 1750 from brick, with stone quoins at the corners. It is extended on both sides by lower wings ending in pavilions. The stone quoins highlight the corners of the brick main building. The lower height of the wings steps down the building's mass on either side; the pavilions form their ends. Its protected status also differs from that of the church: the château is partially listed as a Monument historique; the protection covers the façades, roofs and wrought-iron stair railing. The dates refer to different things in this comparison: at the church, they relate to the nave and choir; the date around 1750 applies to the château's main building. The two building histories therefore sit side by side, spanning different periods.

Two Routes, Two Highlights

The contrast between activity and landscape can help you choose a route. Le circuit des Voyeuls is suitable for walking and cycling and starts at the car park at the end of Rue sur l'eau. Check local signage and parking arrangements before setting off. The Circuit des Bois offers a panorama over the Somme Valley. The difference is simple: for Le circuit des Voyeuls, the focus is on the activity and starting point; for the Circuit des Bois, it is on the panorama. Choose based on whether the named activity or the view over the Somme Valley matters more to you on your outing.
