Oigny-en-Valois combines architectural history with hiking opportunities: the château brings together fortification features and Renaissance details, while numerous hikes lead to forest trails and the Ourcq Canal. This gives you different priorities to consider when planning your trip: you can focus on the village’s architectural styles or include hiking destinations. The landscape also provides its own setting for this choice.

A clearing and agricultural plains

Oigny-en-Valois lies in a clearing in the Massif de Retz. Agricultural plains surround the village. Its connection to the forest and its open, agricultural surroundings together shape the character of the place. Hikes towards the forest trails and the Ourcq Canal offer different destinations from the village’s buildings; these can be seen as distinct interests for a stay.

Château, church and historic memorials

The Château d'Oigny-en-Valois dates from the beginning of the 16th century and is built of brick and stone. It retains both fortification features and details of Renaissance decoration. Two aspects therefore sit side by side in this building: its fortification features and its decorative design. Those interested in architecture can take these features as a distinct way of exploring the village’s history.

The Church of Saint-Martin has a different kind of layout. Its elongated floor plan comprises a three-bay nave, a choir, a south aisle and a single chapel. A bay is a section of the nave; the reference to three bays makes its structure more specific. In contrast to the château, the focus at Saint-Martin is therefore on the parts of the floor plan.

The Chapelle funéraire du Général Charpentier was built in the early 19th century to house the body of the imperial general Henri François Charpentier. Charpentier died in 1831. The name of the funerary chapel is thus linked to a specific purpose and a named person.

The Croix de Cimetière (ancien Calvaire) offers a different glimpse of the past: the work dates from the 14th century and is classified as a historic monument. It is adorned with a crucified Christ and the Virgin Mary. It was probably moved to the new cemetery at the end of the 19th century. Its date of creation and its presumed relocation are two distinct historical points of reference.

Hikes and trail connections

Oigny-en-Valois is a starting point for numerous hikes to the forest trails and the Ourcq Canal. One route described in more detail is the Laie de la Poudrerie (chemin de la Briquetterie): it leads to Les Fonds and offers a striking sunrise early in the morning, as well as a beautiful view of the village of Dampleux. Early morning is explicitly part of the experience described here; the route therefore offers something different from the general hiking destinations of the forest trails and canal.

Two other trails also have different connections: the Route Européenne D'Artagnan passes through the village. The GR 11, also known as the Tour d'Ile de France, is one of the hiking trails associated with Oigny-en-Valois. One description refers to the route through the village, while the other describes the trail’s connection with the commune.

The municipal washhouse, or lavoir, dating from the 19th century is also part of the local heritage. It lies at the southern exit of the village along the D 1380 and is fed by a spring. Visitors can walk around the lavoir and take photographs. This describes a specific visitor activity at the site, while each of the hiking trails mentioned has its own destinations and route connections.

Choose the focus of your stay

When looking for a holiday apartment, you can consider whether you want to focus your stay mainly on the buildings or also include hikes. The architecture offers different forms and historical contexts; the trails differ in their destinations and in how they connect with Oigny-en-Valois.
