About 29 kilometers of trails run through Montigny-Lengrain; you can also explore Fontaine Saint-Martin on a 1.7-kilometer walk. This gives you a network of trails, a specific natural site and Saint-Martin Church as different starting points for your trip.

Hiking trails and special details

The municipality lists about 29 kilometers of trails running through Montigny-Lengrain. Eleven kilometers of these have been selected for and included in the PDIPR. Together, these figures give you an idea of the hiking options and distinguish the entire trail network from the specifically selected routes.

One named option is the “Les Hameaux de Montigny” hike. It starts at the town hall, 1 place de l’Église. Along the route, you can see eight-pointed, star-shaped pinnacles. This shape is created by cutting a cube diagonally; one such motif appears on the cover of a well.

The route follows paths along the edge of the plateau, through woodland and along the valley floor. It therefore connects different types of terrain with a specific architectural detail on the well.

Fontaine Saint-Martin

Fontaine Saint-Martin is a natural landmark featuring a spring, cascade, stream and travertine. It is about five meters high and consists of three rocks stacked on top of one another. It is also known as “Roche pleureuse” and is listed as a natural site in Picardy. At 1.7 kilometers, the walk to this natural site is a clearly stated distance compared with the trail network of around 29 kilometers.

The public is permitted to access the private grounds, except on hunting days. Check local access information before your visit, especially if it might fall on a hunting day.

Saint-Martin Church and its furnishings

Saint-Martin Church was built in three periods: in the 12th, 13th and 15th centuries. A Renaissance cross stands in front of its west portal; it was classified as a historic monument by decree dated November 10, 1921. The building periods spanning several centuries provide a framework for viewing the church as the product of different eras.

The protected furnishings include the polychrome wooden statue “Virgin and Child Holding a Bunch of Grapes.” It dates from the late 16th century and has been listed as protected movable cultural property since September 1, 2000. The eagle lectern and the painting “The Carrying of the Cross” have also been listed as protected movable cultural property since that date.

The church can be visited during the town hall’s public opening hours. Visitors check in at the administrative office, sign the register and receive the keys. Confirm the procedure before your arrival so you can plan your visit during the designated opening hours.
