The 35-hectare Oppidum near Le Câtelet and the marked Le bocage de Mondrepuis walking trail reveal two different facets of the area: archaeological history and bocage landscape. Also worth discovering are the modern Saint-Nicolas Church and L'Archipel, which is gradually being transformed into a place for architecture, heritage, crafts and the environment. This makes it easy to plan your trip around specific interests. Check in advance whether the permanent exhibition can be visited; if you are interested in products from the Chèvrerie du Hauty, it is worth asking about availability.

Archaeology at Le Câtelet

The Oppidum near Le Câtelet covers 35 hectares and has a complete defensive system consisting of a rampart, ditch and landscaped entrance. Archaeological finds attest to settlement from the Neolithic period through to Roman times. The entire Oppidum is listed as a Monument historique; it was listed on 23 May 2014.

The Camp romain du Câtelet is located at the top of a hill bordered on three sides by the Oise and deeply incised streams. A crosswise ditch separates the camp from the rest of the plateau. Finds from the camp include the metal lid of an ancient vessel, several urns and Roman medallions. These concrete archaeological finds complement information about the site's location and fortifications.

Forest, ponds and bocage

The Forêt domaniale de Fourmies et ses lisières includes the commune of Mondrepuis. Forest, ponds and bocage vegetation along the forest edges are among the area's landscape features. It is a type 1 ZNIEFF natural area and is designated under both the Birds Directive and the Habitats Directive.

The Le bocage de Mondrepuis walking trail was created by pupils from Mondrepuis primary school to explore the surviving bocage landscape and observe a wide variety of animal species. It is an easy 4.8-kilometre circular route that takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes to walk. Totem markers show the way. Its length and approximate duration give you a concrete timeframe for planning; check trail conditions before setting out.

Saint-Nicolas: Church architecture and art

Saint-Nicolas Church in Mondrepuis features modern architecture. The previous church was destroyed during the Second World War, and the present church was rebuilt in 1958. The parish church houses a pair of polychrome-painted wooden statues of bishops. The figures may represent Saint Eloi and Saint Nicolas.

L'Archipel in transition

Ĺ’UVRER comprises an architecture SCOP and an association, which together are based at the single venue, L'Archipel. L'Archipel is gradually being transformed into a place for architecture, heritage, crafts and the environment. A permanent exhibition explores the site's history and designs for a more desirable future. Check in advance whether the exhibition can be visited.

At L'Archipel, Ĺ’UVRER organises gatherings, exhibitions, conferences and other community events to bring the venue to life. If you would like to attend an event, check the current programme before your trip.
