The Canal de la Sambre à l’Oise runs through Hannapes. The Forêt domaniale d’Andigny adds a woodland landscape that spans several municipalities to the area’s local character. Other notable sites include the Prieuré de Prémontrés Saint-Jean and the prehistoric settlement site of Bois de Hannappes. Together, they offer a perspective ranging from the canal in the village to a larger forest landscape and two historical themes: religious architecture and prehistoric settlement. These points of interest can help you explore Hannapes through its landscapes, history or walking routes.

The Canal and the Longer Route

The full canal route from Jeumont to Tergnier is estimated to take around five days. This is an approximate guide for the complete route, not for a stay in Hannapes or an individual section. If you are planning the longer trip, check operating conditions before setting off. This time estimate is a general indication for a multi-day journey and should not be confused with the duration of a visit to the village.

The Forêt d’Andigny and Archaeological Traces

The Forêt domaniale d’Andigny is located in Hannapes, Mennevret, Seboncourt and Tupigny. The forest therefore extends beyond a single municipality. In the southern part of the forest, the prehistoric settlement site of Bois de Hannappes was situated on one of numerous sandy hills. The site was discovered in 1964 during sand extraction. This year marks its discovery, not the period of prehistoric settlement. Two aspects can therefore be distinguished: the site’s location in a particular part of the forest spanning several municipalities, and the circumstances in which it was discovered. The sandy hills provide a more precise landscape setting for the site than simply identifying it with the Forêt d’Andigny.

The Prieuré and Saint-Jean Church

The Prieuré de Prémontrés Saint-Jean was founded in the 12th or 13th century and today includes a parish church, among other features. Saint-Jean Church was altered in the late 15th or early 16th century. The foundation and alteration refer to different phases: the later date concerns a change to the church, not the founding of the priory. This distinction is important when understanding the building’s history, as the two dates refer to different events and are separated by a considerable period. At the same time, the church’s current role as a parish church connects its religious heritage with present-day use.

Walks and Route Information

One walking route started in Hannapes village square and continued through the Forêt d’Andigny. If you use this route as a guide, check the current route before setting off. Another walking route passed a geodetic tower or chimney. If you want to include this point in your walk, check access beforehand. The two route descriptions offer different guidance: one describes starting at the square and continuing through the forest, while the other identifies a point that a route passed by.
