Erloy has two distinct focal points: remembrance of the Maquis d’Erloy and activities at Le Moulin d’Erloy on the Oise. The regional Voie verte d’Étréaupont à Proisy cycling route is another feature. For your trip planning, history, water activities and cycling are three separate options, each of which can be considered on its own.

Remembering the Maquis d’Erloy

The Maquis d’Erloy was formed in the Oise Valley at the beginning of 1944. The Stèle du maquis d’Erloy was inaugurated in 1975 at the place where the Maquisards had gathered on 30 and 31 August 1944. The formation of the Maquis and the gatherings commemorated by the memorial therefore mark different points in 1944.

A commemorative ceremony is held near the Stèle every year on the second Sunday in September, organised by the Comité du Souvenir du maquis d’Erloy. If you would like to plan your trip around this date, check the date and programme in advance. A commemorative marker belonging to the departmental network “Aisne Terre de Mémoire” was also inaugurated at the site on 8 September 2024. Together, these details provide a specific historical context for Erloy’s remembrance focus.

Canoe trips and water activities

Le Moulin d’Erloy offers canoe trips on the Oise. The canoeing site includes an island with weirs and waterfalls. These features describe the waterside setting beyond the trip itself. Walking and fishing are also available on site. There are therefore several activities to choose from: a canoe trip on the river, time spent walking, or fishing.

For planning purposes, it is worth choosing the activity you want to do rather than treating all three as similar outings. The canoe trip takes you along the Oise; walking and fishing are other activities at the site. As availability may change, check in advance which activities are currently offered and how the canoe trips operate.

A regional cycling route with changing surfaces

The Voie verte d’Étréaupont à Proisy connects the landscapes of the Oise Valley, bocage, riverside scenery and fortified heritage. Its landscape is not limited to a single type: the river and valley feature alongside bocage and fortified heritage. The surface is also important when planning your route. The route follows a voie verte for some sections and shared roads for others; it is therefore not designated as a voie verte throughout.

If you plan to ride this route, take both its varying surfaces and landscapes into account. Surfaces may change due to maintenance or diversions, so it is a good idea to check the current route before setting out. This lets you consider the character of the route separately from the practical planning of its individual sections.

Which focus suits your plans?

The commemorative ceremony provides a recurring annual date to plan around, while current arrangements are the main consideration for activities at the Moulin. The changing surfaces are a separate planning consideration on the cycling route. This distinction can help you decide what to focus your trip on and what information to check in advance, without combining remembrance, water activities and cycling into a single route.
