Englancourt brings together architectural history, local traditions and views across the green Oise Valley. Among the village’s notable features are Château de la Plesnoye, the fortified Église Saint-Nicolas and the Fontaine de Saint-Algis. Englancourt is also recommended as a stop along the Route Touristique de la Vallée de l’Oise. When planning your visit, it is worth considering the historic buildings, the stories surrounding the spring and the different ways to experience the landscape separately.

Château de la Plesnoye and Rural Aristocratic Architecture

The manor house Château de la Plesnoye was built in 1665. It is considered a good example of 17th-century rural aristocratic architecture in the Thiérache. Its façades and roofs have been partially protected as a historic monument since 14 October 1985. The construction date, regional architectural classification and heritage protection offer different clues: they indicate when the house was built, its style and which parts of the building are protected.

The Fortified Église Saint-Nicolas

The fortified Église Saint-Nicolas d’Englancourt was built of brick over the choir in the 1580s. Its entrance is reached by a staircase within the thickness of the wall. The church has no bell tower; its keep is located in the choir. This unusual arrangement makes the building’s details particularly interesting: the entrance, fortifications and location of the keep together define the church’s character.

Renovation work began in December 2023. After its restoration, the Église d’Englancourt was inaugurated on a Saturday, 27 September. The manor house and the church represent different building periods: the Château dates from 1665, while the church dates from the 1580s.

Fontaine de Saint-Algis: Healing and Tradition

Local religious traditions are associated with the Fontaine de Saint-Algis. Its water was believed to have healing powers. According to tradition, mothers dipped their children there to give them health and strength; the water was also said to have healed many sick people. These beliefs are part of the spring’s history as a traditional faith, not the architectural history of the Château or the church.

Another local tradition holds that Saint Algis rested at the spring in the 7th century. On the eve of Ascension Day, the Rogation procession stopped there. The saint’s rest remains a legend; the procession is a separate feature of religious custom. The Fontaine thus brings together an attributed healing power, a saint’s legend and a procession tradition.

Walk, Cycling Route and Roadside Stop

The Belvédère d’Englancourt can be reached via a short walk around the church and a detour to a viewpoint. From there, views open up across the green Oise Valley. The route from Guise to Englancourt offers a different perspective: it leads to the village, which sits on a hill, where experienced cyclists are rewarded with a panorama.

Along this route, the Oise winds through meadows in a preserved bocage landscape, and the area is also noted for its very beautiful fortified churches. This is distinct from the Route Touristique de la Vallée de l’Oise, a tourist road route with a recommended stop in Englancourt. These options offer different ways to plan a visit: a short walk to the viewpoint, a route for experienced cyclists or a stop along the tourist road route.

The dates associated with the historical themes also have different status. The 1580s and 1665 refer to the construction periods of the two buildings. The story of Saint Algis resting there in the 7th century, by contrast, belongs to local tradition. This distinction helps present the buildings and the stories surrounding the Fontaine as different facets of Englancourt.
