Chéry-Chartreuve brings together architectural and art history at Saint-Remi Church and traces of the former Chartreuve Abbey. In the choir, medieval architectural elements stand alongside stained-glass windows from the 19th century. The area is also part of a Natura 2000 site, and there is a mountain bike route reserved for experienced riders.

Saint-Remi: Architectural Elements from Different Centuries

Saint-Remi Church preserves remnants of a 12th-century church in its choir. The choir pillars also have capitals decorated with water-leaf motifs from this period. The stained-glass windows offer another glimpse into the history of the church interior: the glass painters Durieux and Marquant-Vogel created a total of four windows in 1859, 1861 and 1863. In the choir, they depict Saint Remi, Saint Louis and the Eternal Father. Thus, medieval traces and 19th-century stained glass stand side by side at Saint-Remi. The dates help place these decorative elements in their historical context without grouping them into a single building phase.

Chartreuve and the History of the Abbey

The former Saint-Nicolas Abbey in Chartreuve was founded around 1130 as a community of Premonstratensian canons. Its history is directly connected to that of Saint-Remi: after the French Revolution, the church received the high altar and lectern from the former Premonstratensian abbey church in Chartreuve. These two furnishings offer a tangible link between the histories of the churches. The abbey grounds also include a landscaped garden and a pond fed by the Chartreuve stream. The estate is privately owned. Another historic trace at Ferme des Dames is the former Romanesque chapel, which is now a barn.

Protected Area and Landscape

Chéry-Chartreuve is one of the municipalities included in the Natura 2000 site Coteaux calcaires du Tardenois et du Valois (FR2200399). This protected-area designation adds a wider regional context to the village’s history. It is distinct from the specific features of the abbey grounds: the landscaped garden and the pond fed by the Chartreuve stream. The local points of interest therefore combine membership in a regional protected area with individual historic features, which are not the same thing.

A Cycling Route with a Clear Requirement

La gorge aux loups is a mountain bike route reserved for experienced mountain bikers. It leads to the ruins of the Premonstratensian abbeys in Chartreuve and to the ruins at Ferme-des-Dames. Check current route conditions before setting out. The Ferme des Dames natural site is privately owned and not open to the public; as its access status may change, check before planning a visit. The cycling route and the natural site are therefore separate planning considerations: the route has an explicit participation requirement, while the natural site has its own access restriction.

When looking for holiday accommodation, you can choose the focus of your stay accordingly: Saint-Remi and the history of the abbey offer several clearly defined cultural themes, while La gorge aux loups is expressly intended for experienced mountain bikers. This keeps the choice between local history and cycling focused on the options actually mentioned.
