River, valley and hills

The Le Petit Lay runs diagonally through the Sainte-Cécile area, roughly through its middle, for around ten kilometres. Sainte-Cécile lies at the foot of Moulin des Bois hill and in the steep-sided valley of the river. Wooded slopes, wet meadows and springs shape this valley. From Moulin des Bois hill, you can discover the varied landscapes traversed by the Le Petit Lay. The river, valley and hills therefore provide different points of reference if you give greater weight to the character of the landscape than to a single building when choosing where to visit.

Walking trails and cycling routes

Sainte-Cécile has marked walking trails with panels interpreting the local heritage. They offer a way to discover local history and landscapes featuring forests, sunken lanes, ponds and rivers. This appeals to travellers interested in exploring natural features alongside local history. The trail markings provide guidance, while the panels add a heritage perspective. As markings and trail conditions can change, check the latest information before setting out.

Cycling routes also pass through Sainte-Cécile: routes 24 and 25 run through the town. Their numbers help you distinguish between the two when planning. Walking and cycling are therefore two different ways to include Sainte-Cécile in your stay; the landscapes featured on the walking trails and the numbered cycling routes each offer a distinct focus.

Church and local heritage

Sainte-Cécile’s church is a neo-Gothic building, constructed between 1893 and 1903. It was listed as a historic monument in 2007. The construction period and the listing mark two different points in time: the first indicates when it was built, while the second refers to its later designation. The church’s features include stained-glass windows.

Sainte-Cécile’s heritage also includes typical Vendée manor houses with enclosed courtyards. These are a different kind of building from the church. If you are looking for a cultural focus, you can explore the neo-Gothic church and the manor houses’ courtyards as distinct aspects of the town.

A Sunday morning market

A traditional market takes place on the second Sunday of each month from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm at Place de l’église. This recurring event gives your stay a specific date and time to plan around. If you want to include the market in your plans, schedule your visit for that Sunday morning and check the date in advance.

Which focus will you choose?

Sainte-Cécile offers several clearly distinct themes to help you choose the focus of your trip. The church and manor houses provide an architectural and cultural connection; the walking trails combine local history with landscapes. The market offers a set Sunday date, while cycling routes 24 and 25 pass through the town. You can shape your stay around whichever theme is most important to your travel plans.
