A small vessel from the Merovingian period and Château de Puy-Sec represent different historical periods in Saint-Martin-De-Fraigneau. The town’s history also includes two distinct settlements, the former importance of winegrowing, and a Gallo-Roman connection to the RN 148. Natural history adds further context; for overnight planning, there is a specifically named Maison Familiale with two capacity figures. The town can thus be understood through its cultural history, landscape, and group size.
A find from the Merovingian period
The vessel known as the “Vase des Saintes Huiles” is rare, made of black clay, and 11.5 centimetres tall. It dates from the beginning of the Merovingian period in the 5th century and was discovered in Saint-Martin-De-Fraigneau in 1865. Its inscription is translated as “Balsam oil for the blessing of the divine Martin.” The inscription adds a religious dimension to the object’s material description; its age, year of discovery, material, and measurements also provide specific context. For travellers interested in the town’s early history, the vessel is a distinctive point of reference.
Settlements and ancient routes
Saint-Martin-De-Fraigneau originally consisted of two distinct historic settlements: FRAXENELLUS (989) and TASSO, now the town centre. Another historical trace can be found at Puy-Sec: the hamlet developed in the Gallo-Roman period (900), and its name alluded to problems in the area associated with a lack of water. The settlement names and the interpretation of the name offer different perspectives on the town’s history.
The RN 148 also has a historical connection: it follows the route of Gallo-Roman roads. The history of early settlements and the development of ancient roads therefore stand alongside each other as distinct aspects, without being conflated into a single period.
Château de Puy-Sec
Château de Puy-Sec was built in 1650. It is a large building in the Louis XIII style and has no fortifications. Its construction date falls many centuries after the beginning of the Merovingian period; the vessel and the château can therefore be viewed as separate historical stages. The town’s history thus spans a broad period—from an early artefact to a 17th-century building.
Winegrowing and landscape
Winegrowing was historically a dominant activity in Saint-Martin-De-Fraigneau, until the phylloxera epidemic of 1885 destroyed three-quarters of the vines. The scale of the losses made the epidemic a significant turning point in local agricultural history. Winegrowing is therefore a distinct historical topic alongside the town’s architectural heritage.
The entire commune lies within a Zone Importante pour la Conservation des Oiseaux (ZICO), an important bird conservation area. Harriers have probably been observed nesting in cultivated fields, and orchids are likely to be found along the ditches. These observations concern different environments—fields and ditches—and add landscape topics to the picture of the town’s history. Harriers and orchids are possible wildlife sightings, not reliably scheduled activities, so consider them as an additional element when planning.
Accommodation and cycling plans
The Maison Familiale de Puy Sec offers group accommodation for 62 people, as well as independent, comfortable accommodation for 12 people. The two capacities provide an initial point of comparison when planning for a larger group or a smaller party. Check availability before booking.
