Discover Palluau in different ways: explore the château as a historic ruin, traces of the town’s earlier history and trails through the Bocage landscape. When planning, it helps to keep the specific route details in mind. The Sentier du Pas Meunier lists its length, approximate duration and trail markings; the Sentier n°2 Palluau highlights its starting point and 16th-century buildings.

Château, Church and Local History

The Château de Palluau was built as a fortified castle in the 13th century and rebuilt for Marshal de Clérambault in 1661. It has been a ruin since the fire of 1793 and is partly protected as a historic monument. Its origins as a castle, its reconstruction and its later status as a ruin are distinct chapters in its history.

The Church of Saint-Gilles was rebuilt in 1887 on the site of the former church and adjoining cemetery. In the town park, the Stèle des Martyrs stands between the church and the château. It commemorates victims from Palluau who died defending their faith between 1793 and 1796. The church, château and memorial thus bring together architectural history and remembrance of local history.

Rue Louis XIII offers another smaller historical detail: it is one of Palluau’s oldest streets. A coat of arms bearing the year 1576 can be seen on the door of house No. 8. Anyone interested in traces on individual buildings will find a specific point of interest here, alongside the larger structures.

Another local history feature is the Calvaire on rue du Moulin du Terrier. The Les Amis du Rigolly association and around 15 volunteers have breathed new life into it; they meet regularly on Monday afternoons. This example adds the involvement of the local community to the area’s architectural history.

Trails and Landscape

At the settlement of Pont Chanterelle, the Rigolly Gazon divides the municipality of Palluau into two parts. The Sentier du Pas Meunier provides practical guidance for a walk: it is 7 km long, takes about two hours and is marked in yellow. The approximate time helps with day planning without promising an exact walking time.

The trail passes through villages and hamlets typical of the Bocage. At La Naulière, it passes the site of a former mill and crosses the Pas du Meunier stream over a bridge.

The Sentier n°2 Palluau starts at Parc Chanterelle and winds between 16th-century buildings. The description published in 2025 also invites visitors to take a nature break by the Rigolly-Gazon stream. Route details can change, so check them before setting out.

Water, Museum and Practical Planning

The municipal fishing lake (Plan d'eau communal (pêche)) is in the centre of Palluau, near the church and château, and connects the two parts of the town. Anglers and walkers use the lake. Picnic tables and a recreation area with a children’s playground add to the facilities on site.

The Musée de l'Hyménoptère focuses on social and nest-building insects, including bees, bumblebees, wasps, hornets and ants. It offers educational visits for groups, individual visitors and families, as well as guided tours. A guided tour is listed as lasting an average of 45 minutes; the actual duration may depend on local arrangements.

For 2026, the municipal campsite L'Aire du Verger is closed. If you are planning a stay for a later season, check its status again.
