A reinstalled portal, a fortified château complex and a dike that dams water: Montaigu can be explored through its specific buildings and the history of its centre. When choosing a place to stay in Montaigu, it helps to decide on your focus: architecture and fortifications, the paths through the town’s history, or an open space by the river. The sights offer different ways to explore the town’s past, without requiring a fixed itinerary.

Buildings and traces of history

The Saint-Léonard portal comes from a 13th-century chapel and was reinstalled on the right-hand side of the town hall. Its former use as part of a chapel and its current location at the town hall make different phases of the town’s history visible in a single architectural feature.

The Château de Montaigu is a fortified complex built in several phases during the 15th and 16th centuries. It includes curtain walls and moats, as well as underground rooms, gun chambers, a water gate and fortified embankments. During the Wars of Religion and the Vendée Wars, the château was a strategic site. History enthusiasts will therefore find both architectural features of the fortifications and a direct connection to the conflicts that shaped the château.

The churches also offer different architectural points of reference. The new Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste was built in 1864 in the Neo-Gothic style. The year 1613 is inscribed on the collegiate church of Saint-Maurice. These two details represent different ways of dating buildings: at Saint-Jean-Baptiste, the year of construction and style are specified, while at Saint-Maurice, the date is the one inscribed on the building.

Dike, rivers and urban development

The dike was built between 1476 and 1480. Its two levels of firing positions include cannon embrasures and firing positions for standing shooters. At the same time, it dams the Asson and forms the Étang Saint-Michel. This structure brings together defensive architecture and the shaping of the waterscape; the dike can be understood both as a fortification and through its effect on the water.

The historic centre developed in a distinct spatial sequence: it grew around the château area and along the Maine, before following the course of the Asson. This sequence places the rivers and the château area within the history of Montaigu, rather than presenting them merely as separate names. The Jardin des remparts is located on the Maine and is one of the open spaces appreciated by visitors and walkers. If you plan to visit, check the current access conditions beforehand, as they may change.

Choosing routes and activities

The Parcours du patrimoine takes visitors through 1,000 years of history, with around 40 route markers and information panels. The stops provide a thematic framework for the town’s history; this is a different way to discover Montaigu from focusing on a single building. As route details may change, it is advisable to check the latest information before setting out.

Two hiking routes have different stated starting points: “Rivières & Abbaye” begins at Place de l’Hôtel de Ville, while “La Sénardière” starts in Parc Henri Joyau. If the starting point matters to your plans, you can distinguish between these two routes by their respective starting locations. The hiking route associated with Montaigu, “De l’Écornerie au Bois Noir,” is 18.2 kilometres long. Bear this distance in mind if you are considering the route for your hiking plans; trail conditions and markings may change.

The family rally “Enquête autour de la Digue” is for children aged six and over when accompanied by an adult. The meeting point is the tourist office. The age requirement and need for adult accompaniment can help you take this activity into account when planning.

Cultural programme

Founded in 2003, the Mont’en scène festival presents artistic work by school students at the Théâtre de Thalie. The performances are open to the public. This public stage programme adds another possible activity during a stay, alongside the historic sites and routes. If you would like to attend a specific performance, check the event dates for your trip.
