La Guérinière offers different options for your stay: the Musée des traditions de l'île focuses on the everyday life of Noirmoutrins in past centuries, while the harbor, dunes, and beach offer other points of interest. When planning, it helps to decide in advance whether you would rather explore island history, spend time on the coast, or plan outdoor activities.
Island history at the Musée des traditions
At the Musée des traditions de l'île, displays about seafaring and salt production sit alongside reconstructed rooms from old houses. There is also an extensive collection of traditional island costumes. Together, these subjects offer different insights into the everyday life of Noirmoutrins in past centuries, from maritime and craft activities to living spaces and clothing. Since September 17, 2003, the Musée des traditions has held the French designation “Musée de France.”
The museum’s exhibits thus bring together several aspects of island history, rather than focusing on just one subject. If you would like to include culture in your travel plans, this is a point of interest that can also be compared thematically with salt production at the Marais salant La Nouvelle Brille.
Harbor, dunes, and beach
The Port ostréicole du Bonhomme is located in La Guérinière, on the side facing the Bay of Bourgneuf. This harbor has oyster huts, some of which serve as places to buy and taste oysters. If you are specifically looking for both, this distinction is useful: not every hut is also a place to buy and taste oysters.
Another distinctive feature of the coast is the group of four “Moulins de la Cour” on the grey dune. On the way to the beach, you then come to the white dune. Pé de l'Herse reaches a height of about 23 meters and offers panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean. There are different landscape features to choose from: windmills and dunes, an elevated view of the sea, or activities on the beach.
Beach and shared coastal heritage
The 7-kilometer sandy beach stretches across Barbâtre and La Guérinière. It is suitable for long walks, swimming, and water sports. This means the beach spans both municipalities. The right activity depends on whether you would rather walk, swim, or plan water sports.
The “Moulins de la plage de la Court” and the “Blockhaus de la Cantine” are also part of the coastal and cultural heritage of the beaches of Barbâtre and La Guérinière. Both names add to the picture of this shared coastal area, without attributing the structures solely to La Guérinière.
Getting around by bike or on foot
On the “Nom d'un petit Bonhomme” bike tour, the Port du Bonhomme serves as a stop along the cycling route in La Guérinière. For choosing a bike, No 2 Roo rents out electric and conventional bikes for adults, as well as longtail cargo bikes and children's bikes. The listed accessories include pet trailers, baby seats, carts, helmets, and baskets. When planning, you can weigh up the different bike types and additional equipment rather than assuming there is just one cycling option.
If you would rather spend time outdoors without a bike, you can plan a walk, picnic, or jog in the Bois des Eloux. The options are clearly distinct: the bike tour has a named stop and is linked to a cycling route, while the Bois des Eloux offers three activities in a green setting. You can decide which one suits your stay based on your own interests.
Salt production and regional products
At the Marais salant La Nouvelle Brille, coarse salt, fleur de sel, salicornia, and salt-based products are sold directly. During the free tours, every step is explained, from preparing the salt pans to the traditional production of coarse salt and fleur de sel. A season for these tours is planned for 2026; check the latest opening details before your visit.
A useful comparison of themes is the difference between the site and the museum: there, salt production is part of a broader look at everyday life in past centuries; at La Nouvelle Brille, the tour focuses on the individual steps of salt production. This lets you consider culture, the coast, and salt as different interests when planning your trip.
