L'oie combines two trails rated as easy with a long local history centered on the Château de l’Hébergement-Hydreau and the fairs. There are also escape game experiences and poultry sold directly from the farm. When planning your visit, it is worth comparing the routes in particular: they differ both in their stated duration and in their described character.
Hiking trails with different time requirements
The Sentier du Bois Roland starts at Place de L'oie, opposite the town hall. It is rated as an easy hike with a duration of 3 hours and 30 minutes. This gives you an advance idea of the time required, without treating the route as equivalent to a shorter stroll.
The trail passes through the village of La Tanchaire, which has a special historical connection: it is the birthplace of Louise Regrenil, nicknamed La Hussarde. The place name on the route thus points to a specific person from the area's history and adds a biographical dimension to the landscape.
The Sentier de l’Hébergement-Hydreau is also rated as an easy hike; it takes about 2 hours and 45 minutes. This route includes a very old sunken lane that has retained its original character. Comparing the two stated durations reveals an approximate difference of 45 minutes. The listed times therefore provide a concrete guide when choosing between the routes; the sunken lane adds its own distinctive touch to the landscape.
Both route listings were updated on 1 July 2025. Local trail conditions for the Sentier du Bois Roland may change. Check them before setting out on your hike.
The château and fairs in the town's history
The history of the Château de l’Hébergement-Hydreau dates back to around the year 1000. For centuries, life in L'oie revolved around the castle. During the Vendée Wars, the château was the scene of important events. Anyone interested in the history of L'oie will find here both the long history of the building and its role in the region's conflicts.
The fairs also shaped the town's development. Toward the end of the 18th century, their establishment increased the importance of the hamlet of L'oie. In 1789, the monthly fairs were moved from Vendrennes to the vicinity of the new Château du Fougerais. In the 19th century, the fairs in L'oie grew greatly in importance before officially ending in 1955. These dates trace the fairs' development from their rise to their end.
The area's former transport links also provide historical context: L'oie was near an important junction of two major routes, one running east to west and the other north to south. This adds a perspective on the importance of transport routes at the time to the town's history.
Escape games and farm produce
A municipal newsletter from June 2026 described a live escape game in a former 17th-century watermill in L'oie as the first of its kind in the Vendée. The date makes clear that this was the description at the time. Echappe Toi Si Tu Peux has three escape game rooms in L'oie. If you plan to visit, check current availability in advance.
La Ferme en Bocage offers a culinary connection: the farm sells free-range poultry directly from the farm and at local markets in L'oie. This gives you two specific sales channels to consider when planning a purchase; it does not imply that tastings or farm tours are available.
