Froidfond’s small valleys are home to numerous springs, and slate-rich, heavy soils shape the landscape. These two features offer different ways to explore the area: you can focus on Froidfond’s landscape or make its dated buildings and memorial sites the centre of your visit. This gives you more than one theme to consider when planning your trip.

Church, Calvaries and Memorial Sites

The Église Sainte-Marie Madeleine brings together two building phases: it was built in the 19th century, replacing a priory dating from the 10th century. The bell tower and its pyramidal spire have been preserved. This makes it possible to distinguish the priory’s earlier history from the church’s later building phase.

The calvaries also differ in their dates and the events associated with them. Calvaire le Sacré Cœur was erected in 1915; its base bears the names of 73 soldiers who died in the 1914–1918 war. Calvaire du Pont Prieur was blessed during a mission in 1948. Grand Calvaire was built in 1931 following a mission and is one of the ten calvaries still preserved in Froidfond. The dates and the list of names give each of these structures its own historical significance.

The chapel associated with Manoir de la Ferronnière preserves capitals with the beginnings of vaulting, carved motifs and credence niches. There is also a three-part surround around a granite window. Unlike the dated calvaries, the focus here is on architectural features and design. Those interested in architecture will find a different emphasis here than at the memorial sites.

Puits de la Froide fontaine is on Chemin des Charbonnières and was restored in 2015. The well is also known as Puits des Landes. Its name, location on the road and restoration date help distinguish it from the churches and calvaries and place it among the area’s heritage sites.

Nature Trails and Landscape

Two trails with different descriptions offer ways to explore the landscape. Sentier des biches runs along shaded paths with diverse flora and through woodland. Boucle des chevreuils is a nature trail through bocage landscapes and woodland. When choosing between them, you can consider the features mentioned: Sentier emphasises shade and plant diversity, while Boucle highlights the bocage landscape. Woodland is part of both descriptions.

The trails complement the views of the small valleys and their springs without promising the same landscape experience: each description has a different emphasis. If you would rather shape your trip around nature than buildings, you can use these features to guide your choice. If you want to include both, you can treat the nature trails and historical sites as separate parts of your trip rather than combining them into a fixed itinerary.

Cycling Route and Event Date

The cycling route “De Froidfond à Chateauneuf” runs between Froidfond and Chateauneuf and is signposted at the Froidfond cemetery. This links a local landmark with a cycling route between the two named places. For your planning, the key point is the route between Froidfond and Chateauneuf as a distinct cycling option.

The Feux de Bengale takes place in Froidfond every year around 14 July. If you want to plan your trip around this event, check the exact dates in advance. Alongside the landscape and heritage, a recurring event and a cycling route offer different ways to plan your trip.
