Vallon-sur-Gée brings together a diverse riverside ensemble and architectural heritage spanning several centuries. Two walks with different time requirements and the cheese dairy complement the focus on cultural heritage with outdoor activity and a glimpse of the dairy’s operations.

On the riverbank: buildings and water

On the banks of the river in Vallon-sur-Gée, at the transition to the town center, there is an ensemble of mills, mill races, bridges, weirs and washhouses. Mill races are waterways associated with mills; together with the weirs, they reflect how the river was used. Bridges and washhouses add further types of structures to the riverside landscape. The ensemble thus offers a distinct way to explore the history of the town, one that is not limited to individual historic buildings.

Historic buildings from different periods

The Église Saint-Pierre is classified as a historic monument in France. The Château de Chanteloup has been listed as a historic monument since November 19, 1990, together with its outbuildings and the associated archaeological site. The listing thus explicitly covers more than just the main building.

The Château de la Grange Moreau offers a different perspective: built in 1842 under the direction and to the plans of architect Pierre-Félix Delarue, it is modeled on the Renaissance style and replaced a former seigneurial residence dating from the late Middle Ages. Here, a 19th-century building and its late-medieval predecessor are clearly connected in time. At the Manoir du Petit Béru, the main residence dates from the late 15th century; the manor is considered a rare example of the Renaissance in Maine. An art-historical detail is the central painting of the north side retable: it depicts the Resurrection of Christ.

Taken together, the historical perspective stretches from the late-medieval predecessor through the main residence dating from the late 15th century to the 1842 building. The Renaissance features in two different ways: as a stylistic influence on the Château de la Grange Moreau and as a defining characteristic of the Manoir du Petit Béru in Maine. The grounds of the Manoir du Petit Béru are intended to be opened for visits. If you would like to include it in your plans, check visitor arrangements before your trip.

Two walks with different time requirements

The Balade des vieux logis et demeures is a circular walking route of about 10 kilometers in Vallon-sur-Gée, with an average walking time of 2 hours and 30 minutes. The Vallon-sur-Gée en hiver route is an easy walk covering 3.9 kilometers, with an estimated duration of 1 hour and 15 minutes. The comparison highlights the different time frames without applying the shorter route’s difficulty rating to the longer loop.

The Vallon-sur-Gée en hiver route follows the Gée watercourse, then climbs up to the road, offers distant views of wind turbines, and continues to the commune’s football stadium. Before setting out, check current trail conditions and access.

A glimpse inside the cheese dairy

At the Fromagerie De Vallon-sur-Gée, visitors can explore the sheepfold, the dairy and the small farm shop. Visitor arrangements for 2026 may change, so check them in advance if you plan to make the visit a firm part of your itinerary.
