Montreuil-le-Chétif offers two distinct focal points for planning a trip: the “Roche Brune” PR circuit and its architectural and local history. If you would like to include landscapes and physical activity, you can consider the circular walk; the protected Grange de Bernay, the Manoir de la Touchette, as well as the washhouse and Roman road represent the area's cultural heritage. This allows you to give priority to the themes that interest you and give your stay a focus of its own.

Roche Brune: circular walk, sandstone and climbing

The “Roche Brune” PR circuit is 13.5 kilometres long, marked in yellow, and starts at the church square in Montreuil-le-Chétif. It leads to the Sillé le Guillaume state forest. The route length is a concrete planning consideration: you can make the circular walk a focus in its own right and arrange the rest of your stay around it. The yellow waymarking and named starting point provide two clear reference points for the route.

Roche Brune is a ridge of Armorican sandstone; a rock ridge is an elongated rock formation. Roche Brune is also a climbing area along the circular walk. This offers two different interests for trip planning: the marked circular route and climbing on the rock. If climbing is something you are considering, check access locally.

There is a small car park for the circular walk at the church square. Since local parking regulations can change, check the parking situation before your drive. This way, you can keep the practical question of parking in mind alongside the starting point when planning.

Architectural history and local features

The Grange de Bernay was designated in its entirety as a historic monument on 27 March 2008. The scope of protection therefore covers the whole building. By contrast, the Manoir de la Touchette is notable for its period of construction and architecture.

The Manoir de la Touchette, also known as Bertherie, dates from the 14th century and is privately owned. It comprises a single-storey residence and a tower with a spiral staircase made of stone and wood. The residence, tower and staircase offer specific points of reference for the manor's architectural form. A local legend also links it to Queen Berthe. The two buildings therefore offer different historical associations: for the Grange, the focus is its protection as a monument; for the manor, its period of construction, architectural features and a local legend.

The washhouse and Roman road have also been enhanced in Montreuil-le-Chétif. They broaden the view beyond the buildings to other local features: a washhouse as a building associated with everyday life, and a road known as a Roman road. The cultural themes therefore range from heritage protection and architecture to other features of local history.
