Maigné offers different ways to experience village history and nature: historic buildings, houses, and memorial stops sit alongside a signposted walking trail and a nature trail by the wetland. Those who want to focus on culture can explore the church, architecture, and local history; those who prefer spending time outdoors will also find an educational trail and a picnic spot.

Village history and architecture in Maigné

The 12th-century Church of Saint-Vigor is a good starting point for exploring Maigné. Its stained-glass windows were created by Alban de Châteauvieux in 2019. If you would like to learn about the village on a guided tour, you can request one by email. It should not be assumed that a tour is available at a set time.

The lanes and houses also give the village its historic character: you can explore Maigné’s flower-decorated lanes, and its sights include old grain mills and noteworthy houses dating from the 15th to the 18th century. A washhouse on the Gée is also part of the local heritage. Maigné is also an important stop on the “Petits villages de caractères” network.

A memorial trail has fourteen stops, ten in the village and four in the surrounding area. This extends the story of the village beyond Maigné and into its surroundings. The division makes the trail’s two levels clear: stops in the village sit alongside those outside it, with no particular order implied.

Resteau: manor house, château, and park

The Manoir de la Seigneurie manor house is protected as a historic monument. Its façades and roofs were listed on 17 February 1928. Resteau is also part of Maigné’s history: it was a small independent fief within the castellany of Maigné.

The Château de Resteau was built in 1855 by architect Delarue for Guy Charles d’Andigné and Blanche de Caillau. The château is designed in the Neo-Renaissance style, using brick and stone; its architecture includes four main towers and five turrets. These details give the building a clearly defined architectural character without reducing it to any one feature.

The park is also associated with 1855: Leroy designed it, and it has changed little since it was laid out. The attributions relate to different works from the same year—Delarue to the château, and Leroy to the park. Notable trees shape the landscape, including two cedar trees of Lebanon on the lawn.

Walking trail and wetland

For nature experiences, Maigné has a signposted walking trail and an educational nature trail by a wetland. The two offer different focuses: the walking trail is a designated route, while the nature trail explores the wetland. The landscaped wetland is also suitable for a picnic break.

Maigné is a starting point for numerous excursions into the surrounding countryside. If you mainly want to explore local history, you can focus on the church, memorial trail, and historic buildings; for a nature-focused stay, the walking trail, educational trail, and wetland offer a different focus. You can give these themes the emphasis that suits your interests, without following a fixed itinerary.

Exit 9 on the A11 is 15 minutes from the Château de Resteau, and Le Mans TGV station is 25 minutes away. These two reference points can help you plan your journey if Resteau is part of your stay.
