A one-hour electric boat trip on the Sarthe takes you past wash houses and former weavers’ homes in Fresnay-Sur-Sarthe; Coteau des Vignes offers a different perspective, with its limestone cliffs and rare plants. The area also bears traces of historic trade and crafts. You can focus on cultural history or nature, depending on your interests, or combine different themes with a trip along the river.
Electric boats and historic sites
Electric boat trips depart from the site of the former tanneries and last one hour. Along the way, they pass wash houses and former weavers’ homes. The trip also offers a glimpse of the traces of work once carried out along the river. Trips operate seasonally; check current availability before your visit.
The Halles offer another glimpse into Fresnay-Sur-Sarthe’s economic history: the ground floor served as a grain market, while the upper floor was a covered storage area for cloth. The roof sheltered the goods while they were stored.
Parc du Château offers views of the Sarthe and the Creusot district. The park is also home to the ruins of the donjon. If you plan to visit in the evening, bear in mind that it may close at night.
Nature at Coteau des Vignes
Coteau des Vignes is an Espace Naturel Sensible (sensitive natural area) managed by the municipality of Fresnay-Sur-Sarthe. Limestone cliffs and meadows with rare plants define the site, and information panels line the path. A nature trail starts at the town hall or the car park above the slope. Check trail conditions and access locally, as access rules may change.
Coteau is also home to a small animal park with a donkey, goats, and Ouessant sheep. The animals’ availability may vary. This means visitors can enjoy both the site’s natural features and the animals in the small park, depending on their interests.
Headdresses and church art
The Musée de la Coiffe displays various headdresses worn by women in the Sarthe region in succession since 1800. Demonstrations of bobbin lace are occasionally held there, and the museum also provides games for children. Opening hours are seasonal, and demonstration dates may vary.
The church in Fresnay-Sur-Sarthe has a carved oak door dating from 1528. The left door leaf depicts the Tree of Jesse from the Old Testament, while the right depicts the twelve apostles from the New Testament. Access to the church interior may vary.
