Chevillé combines Romanesque architectural history with routes for walking and cycling. To plan your visit, start by deciding whether you want to focus mainly on the churches and protected buildings, or include one of the named routes. The buildings and routes offer specific points of interest without prescribing a fixed itinerary.
Churches and Architectural History
The Église de Chevillé is a Romanesque church in the Champagne Mancelle and is designated as a historic site and historic monument. The Église Notre-Dame in Chevillé was classified as a historic monument by decree dated December 11, 1912; the Notre-Dame de Chevillé church building dates from the 12th century. Its style, age, and protected status are distinct historical points of reference.
Another protected building complex is the Logis de Biard and its associated barn. Both were protected as historic monuments in their entirety by decree dated December 10, 2014. The protection explicitly includes the barn, not just the Logis.
The estate of the Château de la Roche has medieval origins and was transformed into an elegant neoclassical château in the 17th and 19th centuries. The chapel of the Château de la Roche is located in Chevillé. The Romanesque church and the château, remodeled in the neoclassical style, represent different architectural focal points.
A protection date is not a construction date: for the church, the Romanesque classification and the 12th century relate to its architectural history, while the 1912 decree relates to its protected status; for the Logis, 2014 likewise refers to its protected status. This makes it possible to distinguish architectural history from historic preservation.
Walking Routes
The walking routes include both a route through several municipalities and specific local points of reference. The “Circuit les 3 clochers” passes through Brûlon, Avessé, and Chevillé. The “Circuit des trois Clochers” is listed as 10 km long. In addition, a path in Chevillé, opposite the hamlet of Les Hervalles, leads to Notre-Dame de Chevillé. Check local access and trail conditions before setting out. The information serves different purposes when planning: the place names indicate the route, 10 km gives the distance, and Les Hervalles provides a reference point for the church path.
By Bike
For cycling, there is also the “Vègre et Champagne” circular route, which is accessible from Chevillé and is 31 km long. The starting point and length offer separate details for planning a ride: where the route begins and how far it goes. Check current route conditions and the trail surface before setting out. At 31 km, the “Vègre et Champagne” is 21 km longer than the 10 km “Circuit des trois Clochers.”
