Chantenay-Villedieu offers two easy walking trails with different distances and estimated walking times, as well as local history and activities on the water. Canoes and kayaks are available for hire at the lake, though seasonal availability may vary. Historic sites range from the former church of Villedieu to the washhouse and the cemetery chapel. Planning therefore involves considering both the time required and seasonal availability.
Local History and Places of Remembrance
Chantenay-Villedieu developed in Gallo-Roman times from the estate of Cantenus. The former church of Villedieu has been listed as a historic monument since September 13, 1984. On the banks of the Deux-Fonts River is the washhouse, designed in 1881 to accommodate around 30 washerwomen. Since then, items related to washing clothes have been collected in the rear of the washhouse, near the hearth.
In the open cemetery chapel, you can view the installation through a grille. Thirty-five marble plaques commemorate the soldiers who fell in the First World War of 1914–1918. The site thus brings together several historical periods: the town’s Gallo-Roman development, the washhouse’s planned use, the church’s historic-monument status since 1984, and remembrance of the war years.
Comparing the Two Walking Trails
The Circuit du lac is an easy 2.8-kilometre loop with an estimated duration of 50 minutes. The Circuit des deux-fonds is also easy; this walking route covers 3.1 kilometres and is estimated to take one hour. Both routes start at the church square in Chantenay-Villedieu. There is a sign with route information at each starting point, and a QR code lets you download the corresponding route.
Compared directly, the Circuit du lac is 300 metres shorter, and its estimated duration is ten minutes less than that of the Circuit des deux-fonds. Both routes are rated easy; the main factors in choosing between them are distance, estimated duration, and route type. Check current route information and access guidance before setting out.
Water, Trails and Nature Conservation
Canoes and kayaks are available for hire at the Fred Chouvier leisure area on the lake in Chantenay-Villedieu. Seasonal availability may vary, so check what is on offer before your visit if you plan to take part in this activity. Rental is a separate option alongside the walking trails.
When creating the wetland and walking trails, the municipality protects and reintroduces endemic species. For visitors interested not only in walks but also in species and municipal nature conservation, this is another facet of the area.
Local Festivals
Local festivals include the Festival des Rillettes. If you would like to plan your trip around a visit to the festival, check the latest event dates. This lets you take the festival date into account when planning your stay.
