Saint-Thomas-de-Courceriers can be explored through tangible traces of its architectural and religious history: a château with a turbulent past, evidence of different phases of church history, and a 17th-century reliquary. There are also named circular walks with different focuses. If you are looking for a holiday rental for a stay combining heritage and walks, these features can help you choose a destination that suits your interests.

The Château and the History of the Village

The Château de Courceriers was rebuilt in the 16th century and partially destroyed in 1961. It has been listed as a historic monument since 20 March 1987. The dates mark different stages in its history: its rebuilding, its later partial destruction, and its listing as a monument. Together, they provide a concrete historical context for the estate.

The Vaudelle is also part of the local landscape: the river runs at the foot of the fortifications of the Courceriers estate. This connection between the river and the fortifications is a distinct landscape feature, alongside the château’s architectural history.

Church Architecture and the Reliquary of Saint Anne

The former Saint-Thomas church had two small Romanesque windows in the nave. It also had two chapels, built in the 17th century, which opened onto the choir. Construction of a new Saint-Thomas church began in 1859 with the nave and tower. The surviving architectural details thus reveal different phases in the church’s history: Romanesque windows, 17th-century chapels, and the beginning of a new building in the 19th century.

The reliquary of Saint Anne is also associated with the parish of Saint-Thomas. In 1670, a fragment of Saint Anne’s relics was given to the parish in a small silver reliquary. The reliquary was made in 1669–1670 by Parisian goldsmith René Hébert and is associated with the Church of Saint-Thomas in Saint-Thomas-de-Courceriers. These details link the object, its date of creation, and its religious connection to the village.

Other Historic Monuments and the Chapelle des Rues

Protected historic monuments in Saint-Thomas-de-Courceriers include the Allée couverte des Bonnes Dames, which was listed on 14 June 1988. The Menhir Pierre Longue de Lèverie has also been listed there as a protected historic monument, since 20 December 1990. The two names represent different types of monument: a covered passage grave and a menhir.

The Chapelle des Rues is a building measuring around 3 × 3 metres, behind the cemetery of Saint-Thomas-de-Courceriers on the road to Izé. On the three days before Ascension Day, rogation processions passed through the countryside at the chapel to pray for the protection of the crops. These processions should be understood as a historical religious tradition; this does not imply that they take place today.

Circular Walks and Strolls

The “Circuit de St Thomas” circular walk No. 45 is an easy walk: the route is listed as 7.6 kilometres, with a walking time of around two hours. This gives you a rough idea of how long a stroll will take. Check local trail conditions before setting off.

Circular walk “Autour de la Vaudelle” No. 44 leads to Mont Méart, a 19th-century historic and religious site with a chapel. The two routes therefore involve different planning considerations: for No. 45, the distance, difficulty rating and approximate duration are given; No. 44 is described in terms of its destination’s historical and religious character.

These features provide a clear guide when choosing a destination: architectural history, religious heritage and walks offer tangible ways to plan a stay in Saint-Thomas-de-Courceriers. Depending on whether you would rather focus on historic sites or a walk, you can make a different aspect the main focus of your plans.
