Standing six metres tall in front of Saint-Médard Church, the monolithic calvary offers a tangible introduction to Saint-Mars-Sur-La-Futaie’s heritage. Another highlight is the easy circular walk, the Boucles de Saint Mars. When planning your visit, you can choose between exploring sacred architecture and taking a walking tour, depending on your interests.

Church and architectural history

The present-day Saint-Médard Church was rebuilt in the 12th century. It was extended in the second half of the 15th century, when the choir was built. These are two distinct building phases: a reconstruction followed much later by an extension, with the choir belonging to the second phase. Notable features of the church include the nave and a Madonna and Child. In front of the church stands the six-metre-high monolithic calvary. The Prieuré Saint-Médard de la Futaie, including its church, has been listed as a historic monument since 3 October 1988. The church also houses a liturgical vestment of red velvet embroidered with silver and silk.

Chapels, inscription and local history

The Chapelle de la Famille Vannier is a sight of interest in Saint-Mars-Sur-La-Futaie. An inscription at the Chapelle Chêne-Jouanne bears the names J. Dugué, Anne Degane and M. Julienne, as well as the year 1790. At Hutte-aux-Gabelous, information panels describe objects discovered during excavations. The inscription and panels offer different points of interest: one records names and a date, while the others provide insight into the excavation finds. The hawthorn of Saint-Mars-sur-la-Futaie is considered one of the oldest trees in France, adding a connection with nature to the area’s sacred and archaeological heritage.

Explore the Boucles de Saint Mars on foot

The Boucles de Saint Mars is an easy, nine-kilometre circular walk starting in Saint-Mars-sur-la-Futaie. Allow around 2 hours and 15 minutes for the route. There are lovely panoramic views along the way. The distance and approximate duration help you plan the walk as a dedicated part of your day; as a circular route, it brings you back to your starting point. This makes it easy to plan as a loop, without having to account for two different start and end points. Check route conditions before setting off, as they may change.

Picnic and access

There is a picnic spot by the pond near the former railway station, which you can plan as a break outdoors. The former Prieuré de la Futaie is privately owned and is not open to visitors. Check this access information again before your trip.
