Saint-Calais-du-Désert offers points of interest for planning a trip focused on heritage and hiking. The Grotte de Lourdes lies at the foot of a slope on the banks of the Mayenne. The Boucle des Moulins highlights the path surface, the river crossing and the former use of a mill leat; the GR® de Pays Tour du Mont des Avaloirs is described as a 100-kilometre route with stages spread over several days. If you are looking for accommodation, you could first consider whether your focus is on historic sites, a hike with specific route features, or planning a multi-day itinerary.

Hiking: route character or multi-day stages?

The Boucle des Moulins is a hike in the Mayenne Valley. Three quarters of its route follow unpaved paths. This proportion gives a specific indication of the route’s character. When crossing the Mayenne, the route uses an iron footbridge; horse riders can use a ford instead. Both the surface and the river crossing are therefore relevant when planning. The two crossing options are intended for different user groups: the bridge is for pedestrians, while the ford is the alternative for horse riders.

The GR® de Pays Tour du Mont des Avaloirs is 100 kilometres long. It is planned as stages of three, four or five days. This provides a clear framework for a multi-day itinerary, distinct from the information about the Boucle: there, the focus is on the proportion of unpaved paths and the crossing of the Mayenne; for the GR, it is on the length of the stages. If you are planning a stay, this comparison can help you first weigh up route features against a multi-day hiking format.

Mill leat and old mills

The Boucle des Moulins follows the former mill leat, which once supplied the Moulin Arrondeau grain mill. The route thus connects with a former use of the watercourse: it channelled water to a grain mill. In addition to being a route through the Mayenne Valley, the hike therefore has a historical connection to the use of the river. The theme of mills also features in the valley of Saint-Calais-du-Désert: old mills there are associated with the GR® de Pays Tour du Mont des Avaloirs. The two hiking routes thus differ not only in how they are planned, but also in their respective connections to mills.

Grotte de Lourdes and Mont Calvaire

The Grotte de Lourdes was built in 1902. The Mont Calvaire de la Grotte was conceived at the same time—this refers to its conception, not explicitly to its construction that year. The Calvary has fourteen stations; at its summit stands a cement cross facing the valley. The description thus combines a precise date for the grotto with specific features of the Calvary: the number of its stations, the cross at the summit and its orientation. Together, these details give the local heritage a clear historical and spatial structure.

Cordouan: a possible earlier interpretation

Cordouan in Saint-Calais-du-Désert also offers a glimpse into the past, but is expressly described with caution. The site may have been an earlier location surrounded by ditches; the structures could date from the Iron Age. This is a possible interpretation, not a firm dating. Cordouan therefore has a different chronological relationship to the grotto: the latter is dated to 1902, while the proposed dating of the structures at Cordouan remains open and tentative. Anyone interested in the area’s history can thus distinguish between a clearly dated structure and a possible earlier past.
