Saint-Aignan-sur-Roë offers several distinct reasons to visit: nature in two parks, a 24-kilometre circular trail and the architectural history of the Chapelle du Frêne. There is also a community that invites visitors to get to know them and pray together. These themes each have their own focus—from landscape and exercise to culture and spiritual encounters.

Nature between water and bocage

The Parc du Frêne covers 7.5 hectares and comprises a mosaic of aquatic habitats, bocage and wooded slopes. The water area includes a river, a pond and other bodies of water; hedgerows and meadows shape the bocage. The French word bocage describes a landscape divided by hedgerows; here, hedgerows and meadows are explicitly part of it. Together with the river, pond and wooded slopes, this creates a nature theme that is not limited to aquatic habitats. On 6 September 2018, the Parc du Frêne was awarded nature-site status as part of “Sur le chemin de la nature”. The Parc communal de Saint-Aignan-sur-Roë, for its part, offers a variety of different wetland habitats. The two natural sites have different focuses: hedgerows, meadows and wooded slopes are also part of the landscape mosaic at the Parc du Frêne, while the variety of wetland habitats is the main focus at the Parc communal.

Access to the Parc du Frêne

The Parc du Frêne is located in the north of the municipality and can be accessed via the Chapelle du Frêne; parking is available there. The route via the chapel provides a clear landmark for your visit to the natural site. The chapel is also a subject in its own right for exploring architectural and local history.

The 24-kilometre circular trail

The “Circuit de Saint-Aignan et Boucles des Caves” circular trail is numbered 56 and is 24 kilometres long. Its length gives you a clear point of reference for planning your hike: you can make the trail a focus of your activities and plan to cover the entire route. If you are considering whether hiking should be the main focus of your stay, the full distance is a useful point of comparison.

The history of the Chapelle du Frêne

The Chapelle du Frêne was built by the JULLIOT family between 1868 and 1872 and is designed in the neo-Gothic style. The date range places its construction in the second half of the 19th century, while the neo-Gothic design identifies its architectural style. The chapel also served as a burial place. Its construction period, style and historical use offer different ways to explore local history: you may be interested in how the building came about, its architecture or its former function. Its use as a burial place is part of the chapel’s history.

An invitation from the community

The Petites Sœurs de Marie Mère du Rédempteur invite visitors to get to know their community in Saint-Aignan-sur-Roë and pray with them. The focus is on meeting the community and praying together. If you would like to include religious practice in your trip, this invitation offers a distinct reason to visit alongside the nature, hiking and architectural history themes. It also allows you to consider a spiritual focus when choosing where to stay.
