Brécé combines architectural and cultural history with a signposted circular walk and distinctive landmarks along the Colmont. The Notre-Dame de l’Assomption church, an Écomusée exploring rural life in the past, and the “du Saut au Loup et des Vieux Moulins” trail offer concrete starting points for planning a trip. The local heritage ranges from a megalithic burial site to medieval buildings, alongside landscape features and several route distances. Cultural history and trail length therefore offer different focal points for a stay.

Heritage and architectural history

The Notre-Dame de l’Assomption church dates from the 15th century and is listed as a historic monument. Its imposing tower has four pinnacles and a spire. Features inside include a carved wooden pulpit and three altarpieces, which are also classified as historic monuments. Altarpieces are decorative panels behind an altar; these three pieces add specific details to the church’s interior.

At Petit Vieux Sou, a megalithic side-chamber tomb has been listed as a historic monument since 14 June 1988. It adds another chapter to the heritage alongside the medieval buildings. The Motte féodale de l’Ecluse is also dated to the 11th–12th centuries.

The fortified manor house Le Manoir du Châtaignier dates from the 14th century and has an impressive turret. It is privately owned; visits are possible in the presence of the owner. This condition is part of planning a visit. The church, burial site, motte and manor house represent different architectural forms and periods, without requiring a single shared visiting itinerary.

The circular trail and landscape along the Colmont

The permanent “du Saut au Loup et des Vieux Moulins” circular trail is about 20 km long. Shorter loop options cover 7, 12, 13 and 15 km. The 7 km loop is the shortest option listed, while the 15 km loop is the longest of the shorter loops; the full route of about 20 km covers a substantially greater distance. This makes it possible to compare specific distances when choosing a preferred route length. The walk can start at the town hall square, and the trail is signposted through the countryside.

Le Rocher de la Colmont is a striking rock along the Colmont. Its surface markings resemble a human face. When the water is high, the rock appears to emerge from the floodwaters. Both its face-like markings and the impression it creates when water levels are high define this landscape feature.

Rural life at the Écomusée

The Écomusée de Brecé conveys the story of rural life in the 19th and 20th centuries through tools, clothing from earlier times and photographs. These different materials offer several concrete points of reference: objects and clothing are presented alongside images, which also form part of the interpretation. The visitor materials are suitable for children. In 2026, visits are possible year-round, but only by prior appointment.

Brécé brings together a range of themes: historic buildings and their furnishings, rural life in the past at the Écomusée, and a choice of distances on the circular trail. When planning a stay, visitors can weigh up these options according to their preferred route length and the need to book a museum visit in advance.
