The Circuit 6 and the Menhir de la Hune define the walking experience in Bazougers; the church, chapel, mill and priory introduce historical and architectural themes. The circular route has a clearly named starting point and a specific length, while the buildings offer a range of religious and architectural details. “Peindre à la ferme” adds an artistic focus.

Churches, Chapels and Architectural History

On 10 August 1931, the church in Bazougers was classified as a historic monument. Its rear chapel dates from the 16th century and is now used as a sacristy. The dates have different meanings: 1931 refers to the church’s classification, while the 16th century refers to when the chapel was built.

In the village centre, the Chapelle du Chenot and its altarpieces are among the sights. An altarpiece is a decorated structure behind an altar. The Moulin de la Pelonnière is a restored windmill built in 1826 by M. Geslot. The Château de Souvray has a renovated donjon, or fortified main tower. The chapel, windmill and donjon thus represent different architectural forms.

The Prieuré de la Cotellerie in Bazougers is a modern building with Romanesque-inspired architecture. Here, Romanesque describes the architectural style, not a medieval construction date. The priory’s crypt is dedicated to the martyrs of Laval. The priory offers self-guided visits. Check the visitor information in advance, as this service may change.

Circular Walk to the Menhir de la Hune

The circular walking route is called “Circuit du Menhir de la Hune à Bazougers (No. 6)”. It starts at Place de l'église in Bazougers and takes walkers to discover the Menhir de la Hune. The long loop is 16.0 kilometres and offers the chance to explore the countryside of the Mayenne département. Place de l'église is the starting point, and the menhir is the destination to discover. Check local trail conditions before setting out.

The menhir is 5.6 metres high. Originally, the stone lay on the ground and was used as a polishing stone. This distinguishes its physical size from its former position and use: the height describes the monument, while the other two details relate to its history.

Drawing and Painting

“Peindre à la ferme” is a drawing and painting course at the hamlet of La Grulière in Bazougers. It covers drawing as well as watercolour, acrylic and pastel painting; the course leader may adapt the content. Unlike the circular walk, the focus here is on art rather than a route. If you plan to take the course, check its current availability in advance.
