When planning a trip to Ambrières-Les-Vallées, two themes stand out: cultural history surrounding the Moulin de Champs and the Musée des tisserands mayennais, and trails and water activities. The latter include two circular walks, a railway line converted into a voie verte, and canoe and kayak rentals at Lac de Haute Mayenne. Which theme you focus on more depends on your interest in historic sites, walking, cycling routes or paddling.
The Moulin de Champs complex
The Moulin de Champs is a grain mill in Ambrières-Les-Vallées. Its main construction phase dates to the 15th century; the complex has been mentioned since 1440 and survives in remarkably good condition.
The protected complex includes the weir and ford on the Varenne, the miller's house, the communal bread oven, and the mill itself, along with its mechanisms and grain-processing equipment. The complex was listed for protection by decree on 2 November 1995. The protected site therefore encompasses more than just the mill building: the crossing on the Varenne and the other buildings and technical components are also included.
Weavers’ houses and the history of hemp
The Musée des tisserands mayennais is housed in three authentic 18th-century weavers’ houses. Since 17 September 2003, it has been recognised as a “Musée de France” under the French Heritage Code. Its focus is the history of hemp, a major crop in Bas-Maine, present-day Mayenne. The museum and the Moulin de Champs thus showcase two distinct regional themes: grain processing and the history of hemp.
Walking trails, cycling route and water
The Circuit de la Varenne is an easy 11-kilometre circular walk starting in Ambrières-Les-Vallées. It runs between the Mayenne and Varenne rivers and can also be started at the Parc de Vaux campsite. Another option is the 9.1-kilometre circular walk “Cité médiévale et lac de Haute Mayenne.” It is shorter than the Circuit de la Varenne, which is described as an easy route. The “Cité médiévale et lac de Haute Mayenne” route is connected to the Aléop regional public transport network. If you plan to use this connection, check the timetable for your travel date.
For cycling connections, the former railway line between La Chapelle-Anthenaise and Ambrières-Les-Vallées has been converted into a voie verte. From Ambrières-Les-Vallées, the voie verte provides a connection to the Vélo Francette cycle route. Canoes and kayaks are available to rent at the water sports centre on Lac de Haute Mayenne under the “Canoë-Kayak d'Ambrières-les-Vallées – Parc de loisirs de Vaux” offering. If you have a specific travel date in mind, it is advisable to check current rental availability.
