Varrains lies at the heart of the Saumur-Champigny appellation and is largely shaped by winegrowing. Wine, tuff-stone cellars and historic estates offer different ways to explore the area: you can taste wines, plan a tour at Domaine des Varinelles or admire the architecture of the manor houses, château and church. If you want to combine fine food and wine with architectural heritage, you’ll find both here as part of the local character.

Taste wine and discover wine estates

In Varrains, you can taste the full range of wines from the Saumur appellation, especially Saumur-Champigny. A tour at Domaine des Varinelles offers a different focus: it starts at the bottling line and then continues through the estate and cellar. These two experiences draw attention to different aspects—either the wines themselves or the stages of the production process. Varrains is also home to wine estates with cellars built into the tuff stone. Here, winegrowing is evident not only through tastings, but also in the estates’ buildings.

Historic estates and their architecture

A manor house dating from the 18th century at 100 Grande Rue, together with its dovecote tower and the adjoining building to the west, is listed as a historic monument. The manor house’s dovecote in the tower contains 650 pigeon niches—a specific detail that draws attention to the features of the estate.

The Château de Varrains at 11 Grande Rue was rebuilt in the 18th century on older foundations. Two projecting side wings with crescent-shaped pediments stand out on the façade. Panels with busts in Renaissance-inspired medallions add to the design. The estate is arranged around a courtyard of honour dating from 1780, a farmyard with stables and a dovecote, and a 19th-century wine courtyard. The three courtyard areas reveal different functions and periods within the estate.

Saint-Florent Church and local events

Saint-Florent Church also offers architectural details that are easy to compare. The nave has a wooden ceiling and is lit by round-arched windows. The choir contains an 18th-century marble altar and a domed apse. In this way, the materials and window shapes in the nave sit alongside the dated altar and the distinctive shape of the choir’s end.

The traditional Fête des Ifs takes place in Varrains in September and features events celebrating wine and gastronomy. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates for the relevant year. Runners came to Varrains for the 2024 Foulées du Saumur-Champigny; the routes passed through the countryside, vineyards and wine estates. This adds a sporting perspective on the wine-growing landscape to the themes of wine tasting and architecture, without assuming that an event is currently scheduled.
