If you’re looking for a destination for a trip focused on architecture, crafts or nature, you can take these aspects into account when making your choice.
The Loire Landscape and the Townscape
Turquant is located in the Loire-Anjou-Touraine Regional Natural Park. The landscape combines chalk cliffs, troglodytic houses and vineyards above the Loire. The harbor offers panoramic views of the river and its birdlife. Alongside the buildings, the landscape above the Loire and the view from the harbor are attractions in their own right.
A Comparison of Historic Buildings
Characteristic features of the local heritage include tuffeau houses with slate roofs, partly underground dwellings, moulin-cavier windmills, manor houses, residences and châteaux. At the Moulin de la Herpinière, the building’s history can be traced through a specific monument: its main construction phases date to the 17th and 18th centuries; it has been listed as a historic monument since May 7, 1982. The main construction phase of the Manoir de la Chauvellière dates to the 18th century. The protected ensemble includes the façades and roofs of the manor house, chapel and pavilion. The underground dovecote is fully protected. The ensemble was listed on July 18, 1973.
The Église Saint-Aubin adds further historical layers to this comparison. It was built in the mid-12th century, but today consists mainly of structural elements from the 15th and 16th centuries. Two altar reliefs from the 17th century come from Fontevraud Abbey; they are joined by contemporary stained-glass windows on the theme of evangelization in Anjou.
Crafts in the Tuffeau Galleries
Several workshops display contemporary works made locally in the tuffeau galleries, including ceramics, glass, sculpture, leather, textiles and decorative pieces. In the troglodytic craft village, artisans and sculptors welcome visitors into the caves. Participation in workshop activities may depend on the season. If you’re planning to take part, check what’s available for your visit.
A Walk and a Cycling Route
The circular trail “Turquant, un tendre cœur de pierre” begins and ends at Place de l’église and is suitable for families. This makes it easy to plan a walk with a clearly designated starting and finishing point. For a cycling trip, there’s another option: the established La Loire à Vélo route passes through the Turquant area. This lets you distinguish between a circular walk and a cycling route as two different ways to plan your trip.
Pomme Tapée as a Culinary Highlight
The “Les Pommes Tapées du Val de Loire” site offers a visit to a troglodytic hillside dwelling, a museum dedicated to “Pomme Tapée” and a tasting of the specialty that is still made there. Tour formats and production processes may change, so check the current offering in advance if you’re planning to visit.
