The church of Thorigné-D'anjou stands on a rocky outcrop; the Circuit de l'Abbaye combines architectural heritage with rural landscapes. These two themes offer different focuses for planning a trip: the church provides an introduction to local architecture, while the Circuit brings together cultural heritage and bocage landscapes. A walk through the streets also draws attention to the history of the village.

Church and manor house: different periods of construction

The church dates back to the 11th century and is listed as a Monument historique. Its single-nave Romanesque nave and a wooden panelled feature, also dating from the 11th century, are two specific architectural details. “Single-nave” describes a nave with one main aisle; the wooden panelled feature is distinct from the floor plan. The dates place both the building and this decorative detail in the 11th century. Together with its location on a rocky outcrop, these features make the church an architectural highlight encompassing its design, age and setting.

The Manoir de la Harderie represents a later period of construction. The manor house dates from the late 17th century and includes a main building and agricultural outbuildings. It also has a reconstructed park in the style of the 17th century. Compared with the church, this creates a chronological span: the church architecture, dating back to the 11th century, is followed by a manor house from the late 17th century. This makes it possible to explore two distinct historical points of reference. The house, outbuildings and park are all features of the manor.

Another building reflects everyday life: around 1840, a covered washhouse was built for washerwomen at a spring that never runs dry. This brings another type of historic building into view alongside the church and manor house, one associated with the work of washerwomen.

A walk and the Circuit de l'Abbaye

A walk through the streets of Thorigné-D'anjou offers an introduction focused on local history and architecture. The Circuit de l'Abbaye starts in Thorigné-D'anjou and combines an exploration of architectural heritage with rural landscapes. The difference lies in the focus: the walk centres on the streets and the village's history, while the route also takes in the landscape. It passes through bocage landscapes; on the return journey, it follows the Ruisseau de Thorigné. Cultural discoveries and rural stretches are therefore equally part of the Circuit.

The Ruisseau de Thorigné rises at the Fontaine Saint Martin, flows through the village and empties into the Mayenne. Its course links the spring, village and river in a clear sequence. On the return journey, the Circuit follows the stream; the watercourse is thus both part of the route described and a distinctive feature of the local landscape.
